SATURDAY 22nd MARCH

MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION

COLESHILL TOWN 0 v 2 ROMULUS

Coleshill failed to match their recent performances which gained wins over West Mids Police and Feckenham and slipped to a disappointing defeat to sixth placed Romulus. The visitors had the upper hand for most of the game and even in Town’s best spell of the game just before Romulus scored the first goal; they never seriously tested the visitors keeper. The Pack Meadow pitch had dried out amazingly quickly with the recent turn in the weather, and the hard, bobbly conditions made good football difficult, but Romulus adapted better and played to their strengths. They are a big, powerful side that get the ball forward quickly but work extremely hard to keep possession, especially the two forwards who gave the Coleshill defence a torrid time throughout.
Neither side created many clear opportunities in a poor first half and the contest for mid field supremacy became scrappy and niggly as the Referee failed to get on top of some robust challengers. On 42 minutes a long ball from right to left and some clever movement by the Romulus front line created a gaping whole in the Town rear guard. Dave Rimmer got a hand to the shot that resulted and defected the ball onto the post but Matt Hawker was on hand to tap into an empty net.

A Stuart Howard free kick hit straight at the keeper and a Lee Dempster effort from 25 yards that went narrowly wide was the extent of Coleshill’s second half fight back as Romulus continued to dominate. On the hour mark the visitors increased their lead as Rimmer again parried a header against the post but Hawker was on hand to nod home the rebound for his and Romulus’s second. Coleshill’s confidence ebbed away and only the post prevented Romulus from increasing their lead.

Team;- Dave Rimmer, Frank Woodburn, Lee O’Brien, Simon Bradbury, Allan Thomas, Stuart Howard (Matty Devine), Carl Smith, Christian Crisp, Carl Meah, Lee Dempster, Mitchell Thompson.
Sub not used Tony Gormley.

M.O.M. Carl Smith
