SATURDAY 29TH MARCH
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
COVENTRY MARCONI 1 V 0 COLESHILL TOWN
Although Coleshill slipped to another defeat, they gained back some pride after the poor display against Romulus, with a much improved and hard working performance at Marconi. Town had endured a torrid time against the Coventry based side already this season, with two 5-1 drubbings, but the home team had to earn the points this time round as they maintain their quest for the title. Both sides were depleted from their regular line-ups, with Coleshill missing Simon Bradbury, Carl Meah and Stuart Howard. Nicky Fell and James Connor stepped up from the reserves to lead the front line, and without centre back Bradbury, Manager Tony Gormley opted for a 3-5-2 formation.
The opening period saw the home team have the majority of possession and chances but neither side seriously tested the keepers. As has happened on numerous occasions this season, Coleshill gave away a sloppy goal after weathering the early storm and just starting to enjoy some possession of their own. Lee Dempster was caught napping as his man made a run into the box on his blind side and in an attempt to redeem himself, the two tangled legs with the attacker going down for a clumsy, rather than malicious penalty. Carl Nolan confidently scored from the spot to give Marconi the lead. Coleshill slowly gained in confidence and although they saw more of the ball they relied on efforts at goal from distance as the home defence impressively kept them at bay. James Connor set up Lee Dempster who shot on the run and Matty Devine gained a free kick after a 45-yard run and took the kick himself. Both efforts failed to force the keeper into a save. Town keeper Danny Moseley was called upon three times in quick succession to thwart Marconi, the latter a diving tip over the bar from a header. The hard pitch was making entertaining football difficult but both sides worked hard to gain the upper hand. In the second half Marconi looked happy to settle for a 1-0 win, and chances were at a premium. Nicky Fell and James Connor had pops at goal but again from distance, failing to force saves. Marconi had chances but the Coleshill back three of Woodburn, O’Brien and Thomas all put in Man of the Match performances to deny the home team and young Danny Moseley again impressed between the sticks.
Marconi march on in their search for honours and Coleshill lost again, but if Town can reproduce the same commitment in the last six games, against lesser opposition, they are sure to be rewarded with more points on the board.
Team;- Danny Moseley, Frank Woodburn, Lee O’Brien, Allan Thomas, Matty Devine, Carl Smith, Christian Crisp, Nicky Fell (Tony Gormley), James Connor, Lee Dempster, Mitchell Thompson.
