Postby Alan Beckett » Sun Apr 06, 2003 3:56 pm

TUESDAY 1st APRIL

MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION

COLESHILL TOWN 3 v 2 FERNHILL COUNTY SPORTS

Scorers: Matty Devine, Christian Crisp, Neil Anderson.

On a terrible night Coleshill and Fernhill produced the classic game of two halves. Sports were by far the better team in the first 45minutes and at the break were easily worth their two-goal lead. But with the wind at their backs and the conditions getting steadily worse, Coleshill warmed the hands of the few people who had ventured out by clawing back the deficit and eventually overhauling the visitors in the dying minutes.
Fernhill have put together a great run recently, steadily climbing the table and reaching the final of a Worcestershire Cup. Coleshill have run hot and cold this season but the narrow defeat to Marconi gave them high hopes of overcoming County Sports at Pack Meadow. Frank Woodburn was missing due to injury, so Neil Anderson was called up after impressing with the reserves for his first senior game.
Fernhill, much changed from the team Coleshill played at Pershore, started brightly with Town unable to gain possession. Sports went close twice before opening the scoring on 10minutes. Perpetual goalscorer Carl Fairhurst gained and took a free kick just outside the box and the ball appeared to go through the wall before going in off the post. Two minutes later and the visitors hit the post, then keeper Brian Cant twice came to Town’s rescue with good saves as Sports dominated. On 35 mins the home defence looked all at see as No 4 reacted first to volley home a right wing cross. Coleshill, playing against the wind had no answer and were unable to string any passes together and were hanging on, praying for the half time whistle. With an interval roasting ringing in their ears and the conditions now very much in their favour, Coleshill went about reducing the arrears. On 55 mins Matty Devine took a free kick from 30 yards. With the keeper still trying to line up a wall and a run across his line of sight by Nicky Fell, his despairing dive only deflected the ball onto the post and into the net. In a total transformation to the first half performance Coleshill tore into the visitors again and again. Crisp, Fell and Smith all went close before a Devine corner was firmly headed home by Christian Crisp to bring the scores level. With the wind now nearly gale force Devine tried his luck but brought a good save from the Sports keeper. Carl Meah, on as a substitute for Nicky Fell, hit a dipping shot from 18 yards which brought a fine save from the keeper but from the resulting corner Town finally completed a remarkable come back. Matty Devine floated the ball into the danger area and debut boy Neil Anderson rose highest to plant a firm header beyond the keeper and into the net. With only minutes to go there was no way back for Fernhill.

Team;- Brian Cant, Lee O’Brien, Allan Thomas, Simon Bradbury, Matty Devine, Carl Smith, Christian Crisp, Nicky Fell (Carl Meah), Neil Anderson, Lee Dempster, Mitchell Thompson. Subs not used Tony Gormley, Phil Heaton.

M.O.M. Neil Anderson.
