Midland Combination Premier Division
Nuneaton Griff 1 v 1 Coleshill Town
Scorer: Dave Wilson.
Coleshill lie comfortably in sixth place in the league without producing anywhere near the kind of performances they are capable of. Town have ran hot and cold since the opening day when they overwhelmed Feckenham, and Saturday was no different when a lacklustre effort could and should have ended in a heavy defeat. It was down to poor finishing by the home team that the game resulted in a draw rather than any contribution by the visitors.
Manager Gary Higgins said "We are not playing well but are still grinding out some good results. I am missing a couple of players but the team that played Griff is not far short of my best eleven. Some players are just not producing the goods and we need a spark from somewhere"
If and when the team return to form, they could easily be challenging the early pace setters. Points, which should have been secured, have slipped away against Cheslyn, Kings Heath and now Griff, that would have put them in a commanding position and with Cov Sphinx, who are also struggling for form, coming up next Saturday, the door is open to put pressure on the leaders.
Nuneaton missed chance after chance and it was to everyone's amazement that the game remained goalless at half time. Coleshill gifted the home team the lead after the break when keeper Greg Allen came for a ball but Paul Burns hadn't heard the call and headed past the advancing stopper to leave a Griff forward the easy task of tapping into an empty net. Coleshill got out of jail with their only quality piece of football the entire afternoon. Matty Devine combined with fellow substitute Emerson Mitchell who in turn fed Dave Wilson who had slipped the off side trap and he confidently finished the move by slotting past the onrushing keeper, for his fourth of the season, already passing last terms total. Few players came away with any credit but centre back Glen Simms in only his third game is starting to find his feet and Matty Devine must have done enough to secure a starting place next time out.
Team;- Greg Allen, Ray Scandrett (Simon Bradbury), Glen Simms, Lee O'Brien, Paul Burns, Chris Kavanaugh, Lee McCarthy (Matty Devine), Carl Mitchell, Mitchell Thompson (Emerson Mitchell), Duwayan Mardenborough, Dave Wilson.
