Coleshill Town 1 v 1 West Midlands Police

Postby Alan Beckett » Mon Oct 21, 2002 9:50 pm

SATURDAY 12TH OCT
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
COLESHILL TOWN 1 V 1 WEST MIDLANDS POLICE

Scorer: Mitchell Thompson.

Manager Gary Higgins was hopeful of fielding the same side for three consecutive games but unfortunately Paul Burns was unavailable due to work commitments. Ray Scandrett was also sidelined with a persistent back injury.
Coleshill were expecting another three points following the fine win over Kings Heath in mid week, against a West Midlands Police side that find themselves well down the league. After a rather dull but even first half Coleshill started to play some of the best football of their season so far and when Mitch Thompson scored 2 mins after the break more goals looked sure to follow. Thompson ran on to an inch perfect cross from Mally Powers to head the home team into the lead. Duwayan Mardenborough almost increased the lead with a firm downward header on the hour mark but the hard working Police side got back into the game with an all too simple goal. The Police were awarded a free kick well outside the box and there appeared to be little danger as keeper Greg Allen came for the deep cross, but Allen misjudged the flight of the ball in the glaring sun and left forward Gavin Smith the simple task of tapping into an empty net. Coleshill hit back with efforts from Glen Simms, Mardenborough and two headers from substitute Mark Hawthorne but the visitors dug deep and worked hard to deny Town. With time running out Coleshill piled forward in search of the winner and in a last minute goal mouth scramble the ball ended up in the back of the net but via a defenders hand. The Referee blew for the offence before the ball crossed the line and so awarded Coleshill an ideal chance to rap up the points from the penalty spot. Up stepped Mally Powers who although had yet to score for the first team had hit five in two games for the reserves. He struck the kick well enough but it was at a nice height for the keeper who made a comfortable save.
This was two points lost rather than one gained and with too many draws Coleshill remain in mid table. But on the bright side, Town are starting to play some good stuff and have lost only once in nine games. The side is full of youngsters and will definitely get better but Higgins is still looking to strengthen in one or two areas and is hopeful of seeing one or two new faces soon.

Team;- Greg Allen, Glen Simms, Lee O’Brien, Richard Gathercole (Lloyd Loveridge), Simon Bradbury, Lee McCarthy, Dave Wilson (Tony Gormley), Mitchell Thompson (Mark Hawthorne), Mally Powers, Chris Kavanaugh, Duwayan Mardenborough.
