Bolehall Swifts 2 v 1 Coleshill Town

Postby Alan Beckett » Sun Oct 27, 2002 5:27 pm

SATURDAY 19th OCTOBER
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
BOLEHALL SWIFTS 2 v 1 COLESHILL TOWN

Scorer: Mally Powers.

Coleshill travelled to in form Bolehall Swifts without Paul Burns and Lee McCarthy, two thirds of a midfield trio that were beginning to form an understanding, and have produced some fine performances lately full of passion and power. The third member, Chris Kavanaugh was left to forge a new partnership with Matty Devine and Tony Gormley but it made no difference as Coleshill again dominated that area for long periods of the game. Ray Scandrett also returned after a three match absence even though he was not yet fully fit.
This game followed the pattern of Town’s last few outings as they always looked the better side without creating clear goal scoring opportunities. Swifts were gifted the lead on the half hour mark when the visitors defence stopped expecting the Referee’s whistle for a foul but when it never came Wayne Phillips had a clear run at goal and finished past keeper Greg Allen. Allen was called upon to make a fine save immediately from the restart but Coleshill were getting back in to the game and were restricting the home team to long range efforts Another defensive mix up allowed Swifts to increase their lead from the penalty spot. A wild swing by Simon Bradbury landed at the feet of John Franklin and in an effort to get back Tony Gormley up ended the forward. Phillips converted for his second of the match. Ten minutes later Dave Wilson went down with a thud and as everyone called for the ball to be kicked into touch Mitchell Thompson sped down the right wing, his cross found Mally Powers at the near post and he finished from four yards out for his first senior goal. Coleshill took controlled as they went in search of an equaliser but their efforts were in vain as the slipped to defeat for only the second time in ten games.
Manager Gary Higgins said “ I thought we just about shaded it and deserved at least a point. Swifts never looked likely to score. We gifted them both goals. We seem to be punished for our mistakes but can’t punish teams back for theirs. We went with a game plan to flood the mid field and hit them on the break and for the most part it worked. Swifts are having a good season but if they are top three material then we are not too far away”

Team;- Greg Allen, Glen Simms, Lee O’Brien, Tony Gormley (Duwayan Mardenborough), Simon Bradbury, Ray Scandrett, Chris Kavanaugh, Matty Devine, Mally Powers, Dave Wilson (Allan Thomas), Mitchell Thompson.
