Romulus 2 v 3 Coleshill Town

Postby Alan Beckett » Sun Oct 27, 2002 5:29 pm

Scorers: Richard Gathercole, Dave Wilson, Mark Hawthorne.

Coleshill seem to produce their best against Romulus and this game was no different. Last season Town did the double over the now Sutton based team, with the away tie one of the best wins of the year 3-0. This time round, Romulus are again championship contenders but they came up against a determined Coleshill side who thoroughly deserved their victory.
Coleshill were ahead as early as the sixth minute when Richard Gathercole rose unchallenged to a Mally Powers corner to head firmly home. In an end to end encounter Romulus hit back to level the scores before a twice taken free kick finally ended up in the net to give Town a half time lead. Dave Wilson’s effort took a deflection in a crowded goalmouth to leave the home keeper with no chance. Romulus again came storming back to level the scores but with only ten minutes remaining Mally Powers was presented with the perfect opportunity to secure all three points. During a period of sustained Coleshill pressure the ball landed at the feet of the Town striker and from only two yards out and the keeper nowhere to be seen, Powers somehow managed to miss the target when it seemed easier to score. When the awards are handed out at the end of the season Powers is a certainty to receive the “Miss of the Year”.
In time added on Mark Hawthorne powered his way through the Romulus defence and unleashed a crisp shot that the keeper did well to parry onto the bar but when the rebound came back into play it was Hawthorne who reacted first to head home the winner.

Team;- Greg Allen, Glen Simms, Lee O’Brien, Richard Gathercole, Simon Bradbury, Chris Kavanaugh, Matty Devine, Mally Powers, Dave Wilson, Mitchell Thompson, Mark Hawthorne. Subs not used Christian Crisp, Ray Scandrett, Allan Thomas.
