Coleshill Town 1 v 0 Coventry Sphinx - Telegraph Cup

Postby Alan Beckett » Tue Nov 05, 2002 1:17 pm

SATURDAY 26th OCTOBER
COVENTRY EVENING TELEGRAPH CUP
COLESHILL TOWN 1 v 0 COVENTRY SPHINX

Scorer: Matty Devine (pen)

Coleshill entered the Coventry Evening Telegraph Cup for the first time and in the drawn against previous winners Coventry Sphinx. Both sides were depleted from the teams that played the league game four weeks ago when Sphinx ran out convincing winners 3-0. Coleshill were without Simon Bradbury, Chris Kavanaugh, Lee McCarthy, Mitchell Thompson and Christian Crisp for varying reasons. Experienced campaigners Tony Gormley and Allan Thomas came in as well as Lawrence Shannon making his senior team debut.
Coleshill started like a train and could have been three up in the first thirty minutes. Mark Hawthorne and Mally Powers twice, missed clear goal scoring opportunities. In a surprisingly open game both teams continued to carve open the defences. Dave Wilson saw his sweetly struck shot narrowly clear the bar and a Hawthorne header went the same way. But Sphinx came the closest as a thunderous strike hit the bar. At half time a fair score line would probably been 4-2 to Coleshill but amazingly it remained goalless.
The second period was tighter but both sides had chances to break the deadlock. A Mally Powers shot brought the best out of the visitors keeper as he saved at the foot of the post but in a carbon copy at the other end Greg Allen parried an effort away for a corner. On 80 minutes a Matty Devine cross found substitute James Connor free at the far post but his side foot shot disappointingly went well wide. In the last minute of the game Coleshill were pushing men forward at every opportunity and full back Glen Simms found himself in the visitors box. There appeared to be little danger when Simms, with his back to goal waited for a high ball to come down but a Sphinx defender climbed over his back and bundled him to the ground for a clear penalty.
With the final minute penalty miss against West Midlands Police still fresh in everyone’s memory it was with some hesitation that Matty “Dipper” Devine stepped up to take the kick but he calmly struck the ball home for a long awaited but well deserved lead. The Referee allowed play to continue for a further six minutes in which time Sphinx ploughed forward in search of an equaliser but Coleshill held firm and now look forward to the next round draw.

Team;- Greg Allan, Glen Simms, Lee O’Brien, Tony Gormley, Allan Thomas, Richard Gathercole, Lawrence Shannon (James Connor), Matty Devine, Mark Hawthorne, Malcolm Powers, Dave Wilson (Darren Pickering). Sub not used Frank Woodburn.
