Coleshill Town 1 v 5 Coventry Marconi - Telegraph Cup

Postby Alan Beckett » Tue Dec 10, 2002 11:55 am

Scorer: Mitchell Thompson.

For the second week running Coleshill produced a poor 1st half performance, but went on to dominate their high flying opponents in the second period. Against top of the table Rugby last week, Town were 2-0 down at the break before showing some fighting spirit and clawing back some pride. This time second placed Coventry Marconi couldn’t believe their luck as Coleshill capitulated and were lucky to be only 5-0 down after 45 minutes. Marconi scored their first on 7minutes and their fifth on 45, with the other goals coming at regular intervals in between, as they were given the freedom of the Pack Meadow pitch.

Few players deserved much credit on a bad day all round. Frank Woodburn tried his best to hold together a creaking defence, Lee McCarthy covered every blade of grass in an attempt to do everybody else’s job, and the front two of Mitchell Thompson and James Connor tried in vain to feed on the few scraps that came their way. In truth too many players had an off day. Manager Tony Gormley made only one substitution at half time, bringing himself on and moving Christian Crisp wide right, but the move settled the team down and although the game was over as a contest, Town did show that, at times, they are capable of competing with the best teams in the Premier league. Although Marconi had a couple of chances to add to their tally, Coleshill had the better possession and efforts at goal. They were finally rewarded with a Mitchell Thompson headed consolation goal on 55 minutes.

Marconi Manager Paul Mills said “We may have took our foot off the gas a little in the second half, but credit to Coleshill in coming back at us. If they had played as well in the first half as they did in the second it would have been a very good contest. They never closed us down or put in a tackle for 45 minutes and the game was over at the break”.

Team. Darren Bray, Lee O’Brien, Frank Woodburn, Matty Devine, Simon Bradbury, Lee McCarthy, Stuart Howard (Tony Gormley), Christian Crisp, Lee Dempster, James Connor, Mitchell Thompson.
