Saturday 17th August 2002
Midland Combination Premier Division
Coleshill Town 3 v 1 Feckenham

Scorers: Dave Wilson, Chris Kavanaugh, Ray Scandrett.

Coleshill got their season off to the best possible start with a fine win over Feckenham. The Redditch based outfit beat Coleshill twice last year and finished in a creditable fifth place, but on this occasion they were no match for a rampant Town team who dominated for long periods and could have won by a bigger margin.
From the start Feckenham were prepared to sit back allowing Coleshill possession hoping to catch the home team out on the break. Town keeper Greg Allen had to be sharp off his line a couple of times, but Coleshill looked the most likely to score the first goal. In the 15th minute Dave Wilson made a determined run into the visitors box but his powerful shot hit the underside of the bar and bounced clear. Although Coleshill had the maintained the upper hand, chances were few and far between but on 39mins Town forced a corner and from the resulting kick Dave Wilson rose unchallenged to plant a firm header into the back of the net. Coleshill continued to dominate and Feckenham were rarely seen as an attacking force but deep into time added on they got back into the game with an opportunist goal. There looked little danger as a long ball was shepherded back to goal by Ray Scandrett but as he and keeper Greg Allen waited for each other to clear the danger, a Feckenham forward nipped in between them to poke home the equaliser.

Manager Gary Higgins was furious at half time that complacency had set in and allowed the visitors to finish the half on level terms after being completely outplayed. The players responded in the second period, stepping up another gear and carved out chance after chance but the break through eluded them until Young Player of the Year Chris Kavanaugh popped up on the left wing with just 15mins remaining. The teenagers determined run took him deep into the penalty box and with defenders closing in on him his close range shot went across goal and into the far side netting to the clear relief of the home crowd. Five minutes later the points were secured but in controversial fashion. Emerson Mitchell's run and close control took him into the box and he was sandwiched between two defenders and the referee immediately pointed to the spot. Ray Scandrett stepped up to take the kick and saw his effort saved by the keeper but the assistant ref flagged to say the stopper had moved before the ball was kicked. Scandrett took the penalty again but this time he made no mistake by sending the keeper the wrong way. Feckenham understandably were furious at the decision but overall could have little compliant over the final result.

Manager Gary Higgins said "I am delighted with this result. Taking into account the heat, our effort and fitness was 1st class. I was particularly pleased with the mature performance of Paul Burns who directed the midfield while the young legs of Chris Kavanaugh, Chris Crisp and Lee McCarthy worked tirelessly around him. We have now set a bench mark and it is up to the lads to maintain it in the next few games".

Team;- Greg Allen, Allan Thomas, Ray Scandrett, Simon Bradbury, Lee McCarthy (Stuart Howard), Paul Burns, Chris Kavanaugh, Emerson Mitchell(Darren Pickering), Christian Crisp, Duwayan Mardenborough (James Connor), Dave Wilson.
