Handrahan Timbers 0 v 1 Coleshill Town

Postby Alan Beckett » Sat Dec 21, 2002 10:46 pm

SATURDAY 14th DECEMBER
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
HANDRAHAN TIMBERS 0 V 1 COLESHILL TOWN

Scorer: Steve Fulford.

Manager Tony Gormley made changes to the side that has lost the last three games, some of them forced but some as reward for players who have been impressing in the reserve side. Allan Thomas returned after injury and Carl Smith took the managers place in midfield after being cup tied last week. Gormley dropped himself to the bench but brought in Peter Hall, Steve Fulford, Daniel Smith and Chris Harvey from Coleshill’s second string. Peter Hall newly signed from Stapenhill showed enough on his single appearance for the reserves to ensure a start against Timbers. Steve Fulford is now the reserves leading scorer and deserved his chance. Daniel Smith is a young goalkeeper who was given a start in the abandoned game against Coventry Marconi in midweek and showed he is more than capable of making the step up. Chris Harvey had to be content with a place on the bench as defensive cover after a series of consistent performances.

Coleshill were determined to put the recent bad run behind them against Handrahan but it was to prove a tough challenge. Timbers are a big side that get the ball forward as quickly as possible. Coleshill on the other hand are a relatively small side and like to play on the deck. The forward pairing of Hall and Fulford were dwarfed by their markers but the two worked tirelessly and with the ball at their feet continually caused problems. The game plan worked to perfection as the back four held firm under an airial bombardment, the midfield closed down the opposition at every opportunity and the forwards chased everything. Steve Fulford was rewarded mid way through the 1st half as he chased a through ball and nipped in between goalkeeper and defender to toe poke home the only goal of the game. Clear cut chances were few and far between as both defences came out on top, but Coleshill were grateful to keeper Daniel Smith as he made a couple of fine saves especially one in the dying minutes of the first half as he dove full length to save from point blank range following a dead ball set piece. Timbers drove forward late on and were nearly rewarded when an effort from 25yards struck the bar, but Coleshill held firm and deserved the three points with a much improved performance. Town looked more determined, disciplined and organised than they have in a few weeks and would settle for grinding out a few more 1-0 score lines as the season enters it’s second half.

Coleshill’s busy holiday programme includes home games against Nuneaton Griff next Saturday then Meir K.A. on the 28th and Fernhill County Sports on 1st Jan.

Team. Daniel Smith, Lee O’Brien, Frank Woodburn, Allan Thomas, Matty Devine, Simon Bradbury, Carl Smith, Christian Crisp, Peter Hall, Steve Fulford, Mitchell Thompson. Subs not used Lee Dempster, Chris Harvey, Tony Gormley.

M.O.M. Peter Hall.
