Coleshill Town 1 v 5 Coventry Marconi

Postby Alan Beckett » Mon Jan 27, 2003 4:20 pm

TUESDAY 14th JANUARY
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
COLESHILL TOWN 1 v 5 COVENTRY MARCONI

Scorer: Simon Bradbury.

For the second time this season Marconi scored five passed one of the best defences in the league. Coleshill had conceded only 25 goals in 21 matches before this game; a record only bettered by the big two Rugby and Leamington. But they were made to look very ordinary as Marconi scored at will, ably assisted by some generous refereeing decisions and two penalties.

It all started so well as Simon Bradbury scored his first goal for the club as early as the sixth minute when he powerfully headed home a Stuart Howard corner. But the signs were already there as Marconi played some of the best football seen at Pack Meadow this season. Coleshill played their part in an entertaining first half as the ball went from end to end. Pete Hall, still searching for his first goal since signing from Stapenhill, had a glories chance to make it 2-0 as he slipped the off side trap but his clever attempt at a lob went over the bar as well as the keeper. A quick free kick by Stuart Howard released Pete Hall and his far post cross was headed clear with Christian Crisp challanging. From the clearance Marconi broke quickly and a jinking run by No 11 was halted right on the edge of the box by a Stuart Howard lunge and to Town’s fury the referee pointed to the spot. Keeper Danny Smith had no chance with the conversion. Within five minutes Coventry were back to take the lead. Coleshill had several chances to clear but the ball broke for the 11 again, this time his trickery gave him a clear sight of goal and he calmly passed into the net.

Coleshill’s confidence had quickly ebbed away and even a change in formation to 3-5-2 failed to lift the spirits. Town huffed and puffed to get back into the game but rarely troubled the keeper and when the referee awarded Marconi their second penalty all was lost. There looked to be little contact as Danny Smith went down at the feet of the forward, but the No 9 had done enough to convince the ref if not the linesman who was better positioned. Smith was again given no chance with the spot kick. Marconi went further ahead with the best goal of the game as they cut open the Town defence. There was still time for Stuart Howard to be shown the red card for foul and abusive language as tempers boiled over. Marconi never let up and completed the rout with their fifth as Town now looked disorganised and dispirited.

Team. Danny Smith, Lee O’Brien, Frank Woodburn (Steve Fulford), Allan Thomas, Matty Devine, Simon Bradbury, Carl Smith, Christian Crisp, Stuart Howard, Peter Hall (Craig Risdill), Steve Fulford, Mitchell Thompson. Sub not used- Tony Gormley.

M.O.M. Christian Crisp.
