Coleshill Town 1 v 1 Continental Star

Postby Alan Beckett » Mon Feb 03, 2003 9:19 pm

SATURDAY 25th JANUARY
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
COLESHILL TOWN 1 v 1 CONTINENTAL STAR

Scorer: Mitchell Thompson.

When you play Continental Star you know you will have to work hard to get anything from the game. They get the ball forward early, they pressurise in every area of the field and they fight for every ball. Coleshill knew what to expect and matched their opponents for commitment and were finally rewarded for their efforts in injury time when Mitchell Thompson pounced on a poor clearance by the keeper from a deep, high cross from Lee O’Brien, to rifle home the equaliser.

Coleshill needed to dig deep following the inept display against Coventry Marconi and Manager Tony Gormley would have been pleased with the way his players reacted. Coleshill had the better of the first half but it was the visitors who took the lead on the half hour mark and although Star took their chance well, Town had ample opportunity to clear the danger. Coleshill pored forward in the second half in search of a leveller but rarely stretched the visitors keeper. Star looked dangerous on the break and with better finishing could have put the game beyond reach. It looked as though it was not to be Coleshill’s day especially when Lee Dempster went down under a heavy challenge and had to be stretched off. The wing back was later diagnosed with ankle ligament damage and will be out for up to six weeks. But in the time added on due to that injury Mitchell Thompson’s volley found the back of the net leaving Thompson Coleshill’s leading scorer with seven for the season and Town grabbing another valuable and well earned point.

Team. Daniel Smith, Lee O’Brien, Frank Woodburn, Allan Thomas, Lee McCarthy, Simon Bradbury, Carl Smith, Christian Crisp, Peter Hall (Stuart Howard), Lee Dempster (Dale Catley), Mitchell Thompson. Subs not used- Tony Gormley.

M.O.M. Carl “Smudger” Smith.
