Fernhill County Sports 2 v 0 Coleshill Town

Postby Alan Beckett » Mon Feb 03, 2003 9:21 pm

TUESDAY 28th JANUARY
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION

FERNHILL COUNTY SPORTS 2 v 0 COLESHILL TOWN

Coleshill made the long trip to Pershore for the first of two consecutive Tuesday night games at the same venue. Fernhill County Sports share the pitch with Pershore and Coleshill visit the main resident next week. Simon Bradbury was missing due to work commitments and with Lee Dempster out for several weeks in came Dale Cately and Steve Lees both of whom have impressed recently with the reserves.

It was like the little and large show as Sports back line towered above Coleshill’s front two of Pete Hall and Mitchell Thompson, but the pace of the frontrunners caused problems from the start. On 12mins Dale Cately forced a corner and as it was cleared the ball fell to Thompson who volleyed just wide. In the next minute Thompson found himself clear on goal but as he shaped to shoot a defender got back with a last ditch tackle to toe poke back to the keeper. Town thought they should be awarded a free kick as the keeper picked up the back pass but the Referee, looking for but getting no help from his Assistant, waved play on. Thompson was back this time with a header from Stuart Howard cross which went narrowly over the bar. Coleshill pinned County back in their own half and at this stage if Town had scored, they were so much on top they would have scored many more, but the first goal wouldn’t come and as so often happens Sports broke away and scored completely against the run of play. Town seemed to have cleared the immediate danger but as the ball looped away from goal the right full back swung out with his left foot and the ball flashed into the net giving Town keeper Danny Smith no chance. Fernhill were suddenly up for the game as they started to believe they could get something from the contest.

The second half saw Pete Hall shoot from distance in the first minute but that was the last of the goal mouth incident for Coleshill as they stopped doing what they had done well in the first half. Stuart Howard’s crosses stopped coming in, the front two became static to make the cumbersome centre backs look good, the midfield and back four failed to make better use of some good possession and to cap a miserable second 45 minutes Sports scored again from a corner. Mitch Thompson hit the post late on but this was not to be Coleshill’s night. Fernhill were grateful for three precious points but in truth, they were there for the taking.

Team. Daniel Smith, Lee O’Brien, Frank Woodburn, Steve Lees, Allan Thomas, Carl Smith, Christian Crisp, Peter Hall, Stuart Howard, Dale Catley (Steve Fulford), Mitchell Thompson. Subs not used- Tony Gormley.

M.O.M. Steve Lees.
