SATURDAY 1st FEBRUARY
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION

ALVECHURCH 3 v 2 COLESHILL TOWN

Scorer: Stuart Howard 2.

Coleshill slipped to yet another defeat against high flying Alvechurch, but the home side were praying for the final whistle long before the referee finally called time. Coleshill had put together one of their best performances in resent weeks and but for a shoddy 10 minute period just after the break, would surely have got something from the game.

Steve Lees kept his place after an impressive debut mid week at County Sports, and with Simon Bradbury returning, Lee O’Brien dropped to the bench to end a run of 29 consecutive appearances. Dean Bagshaw also came in, in a change to formation. Manager Tony Gormley opted for an adventurous 3-4-3 after seeing his side fail to score more than one goal in a game since the 2-1 win over Alveston nine games previously.

Alvechurch, who could go joint top if they win their games in hand, could have scored direct from the kick off and confidently dominated the early possession as Coleshill came to grips with the new system, but once in their stride the visitors started to play the better football. On 24 minutes a Stuart Howard free kick just outside the box brought a fine save from the home keeper, but two minutes later Howard made no mistake from another set piece but this time more central. He curled the ball round the wall, Beckam style, and found the top corner. On 37 minutes Pete Hall was released with a fine defence splitting pass from Christian Crisp. The forward still looking for his first goal for Coleshill decided to square the ball for the onrushing Dean Bagshaw who disappointingly lifted the ball over the bar with the goal at his mercy. Alvechurch’s early confidence had disappeared as Coleshill constantly caused them problems. The home team mislaid passes and started to barrack each other as their frustration grew. But just as it looked as though Coleshill would go into the break with a much deserved lead, Alvechurch finally put a move together that carved open the visitors defence and No10 Rosthill finished with a neat volley.

At the start of the second period Coleshill lost concentration and suddenly found themselves 3-1 down. Firstly the defence stood with their arms in the air hoping for off side as Rosthill skipped through for his second and then a goalmouth scramble somehow ended up in the net, again from a Rosthill but this time from the defensive brother, who up to that point had had a nightmare of a game.

Colshill slowly started to get back into the game with the points seemingly safely in the bank for the home team. Matty Devine, on for Dean Bagshaw saw a shot from 22 yards go just wide, and from a sustained period of pressure following a corner, Dale Calely’s left foot effort from 15yds went just past the post. Christian Crisp tried his luck from 25yards but his drive went straight at the keeper as Coleshill kept up the pressure. With time running out Mitchell Thompson gained a free kick on the left corner of the penalty box. There seemed little danger from such a tight angle but Stuart Howard’s viciously curving kick deceived the keeper and soured into the net. Their was still time for Carl “Smudger” Smith to see his snap shot go narrowly wide as Coleshill pushed for an unlikely but well deserved equaliser.

Team. Daniel Smith, Frank Woodburn, Steve Lees, Simon Bradbury, Carl Smith, Christian Crisp, Peter Hall (Nicky Fell), Stuart Howard, Dale Catley, Dean Bagshaw (Matty Devine), Mitchell Thompson. Subs not used- Lee O’Brien.

M.O.M. Christian Crisp.
