Coventry Sphinx 3 v 0 Coleshill Town

Postby Alan Beckett » Mon Feb 17, 2003 11:30 pm

TUESDAY 11th FEBRUARY
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION

COVENTRY SPHINX 3 v 0 COLESHILL TOWN

With only two points from a possible twenty four in the last eight games Coleshill are producing relegation form, but the stats don’t show that during the dismal run, Town have been the better team for long spells in most of those games. The visit to Sphinx was no different although Coleshill waited until the home team had took the lead before they showed that they can compete. At 1-0 down Town took the game by the scruff of the neck and forced Sphinx back. Thompson twice, Morris, and Devine all had chances to equalise before the home team broke away to score their second completely against the run of play. Sphinx Manager Martin Ascroft was delighted with this win against “a dangerous Coleshill Team”(Coventry Evening Telegraph)

Coleshill had started brightly and nearly took the lead when a Christian Crisp firm, downward, header from a corner brought a good save by the home keeper. But the home team scored first when on 8mins the ball was delivered into the box from the right and Danny McSheffrey was allowed far too much room as he drove home from less than six yards. Coleshill, playing an adventurous 3-4-3, took control and should have had something to show for their dominance. On 35 mins the game was virtually over as Sphinx took a commanding 2-0 lead. Joao Jardin thumped home a right foot volley, when the Coleshill defence only half cleared.

The second half was mainly a dull disappointing affair compared with the previous 45 minutes. Coleshill keeper Danny Smith made two fine saves before McSheffrey scored his second and the best goal of the match on the hour. Crisp had a shot and a header for Coleshill and Falconbridge, making his full debut, hit the bar from a cross but Town never looked likely to get back into the game.

Team. Danny Smith, Lee O’Brien, Steve Lees, Simon Bradbury, Carl Smith, Christian Crisp, Matty Devine (Tony Gormley), Gary Falconbridge, Carl Morris, Steve Fulford, Mitchell Thompson. Subs not used- Dean Donaghy.

M.O.M. Lee O’Brien.
