MONDAY 30th AUGUST 2004
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER
COLESHILL TOWN 4 v 2 BARNT GREEN SPARTAK
Scorers: Mitchell Thompson 3, Pete Hall.

Newly promoted Barnt Green Spartak made their first ever visit to Packmeadow undefeated after the first three games. The big strong physical side showed why they have got off to such a good start as they dominated the opening encounters. Coleshill were without the injured duo of Steve Lees and Kevin Wagstaff but welcomed defender Karl Jones for his debut. Town themselves have made a good start to the season without looking at their best. There is still a lot to come from this team but a magnificent team spirit has kept them in games that they would previously have lost. Coleshill scored with their first meaningful attack through Mitch Thompson on 13 minutes and stunned the visitors when Pete Hall made it two on 25 as the keeper dove over his left foot shot, both goals completely against the run of play. Coleshill didn't seem to know what to do with this impressive lead and proceeded to let Spartak back into the game. On the half hour Green scrambled home a ball which should have been well cleared and after several scares, it was all square as Ricky Carter scored from the penalty spot after Matt Ward had handled in the box. Coleshill survived until half time but the break did them good as they looked a much better outfit in the second period. Barnt Green continued to pile forward but Town were much more solid at the back and always looked dangerous on the break. Stuart Howard struck a post from a direct free kick before Spartak put the ball into the net only for the effort to be ruled out for pushing. On 83 minutes Howard took an identical free kick from 20 yards and once again his effort struck the post but this time the rebound fell nicely for Mitchell Thompson who gleefully grabbed his second of the night. With time running out and Green searching for an equaliser, Craig Davies chased down a long clearance, he forced the keeper to make a save and as the ball came back to him he turned and rolled the ball into the path of the onrushing Thompson who slotted home to complete his hat trick and ensure all three points were safe.

Team: Craig Jones, Matt Ward, James Lloyd, Karl Jones, Des Wilkes, Dean Farrington, Stuart Howard, Carl Smith, Craig Davies, Pete Hall (Danny Carter), Mitchell Thompson. Subs not used Chris Gee, Mark Hill
