MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
TUESDAY 14th SEPTEMBER 2004
COLESHILL TOWN 3 v 1 PERSHORE TOWN
Scorers: Stuart Howard 2, Craig Davies.

Coleshill went top of the league with this win over Pershore Town. OK, joint top! Or, to be precise, second to Leamington who have scored one goal more, and Marconi didn't play so will probably overtake us within 24 hrs. But we are level on points at the head of the pack and that's the first time since 1983/84, when our current Chairman Mark Bishop, was still plying his trade for the Town. That year we were beaten to the title on the last day of the season by Studley Sporting (now BKL), when we lost at Hurley Daw Mill.

This was never an easy game despite Pershore's lowly position in the league. They played a major part in a highly entertaining game and made Coleshill fight all the way. Having come under tremendous pressure early on, Town were lucky to be 3-1 up at the break but in a much improved second half they played some slick stuff and could and should have scored more.
In wet and blistery conditions, the visitors settled first and were sharp and aggressive in the tackle. It came as no surprise when they took the lead after 15 minutes. Pershore's two forwards combined to carve open the home defence, leaving the goal exposed and an easy tap in for 1-0. Coleshill struggled to find their form but were given a life line on 15 minutes. There looked to be little danger but a defender sliced his clearance straight to Stuart Howard who lifted the ball over the keeper for the equaliser. Town's newfound confidence came flooding back and within 2 minutes they were in front. Carl Smith was fouled on the edge of the area but the ball fell kindly for Danny Carter who was free on goal. Much to Coleshill's annoyance the Referee gave a free kick but the anger soon turned to joy as Howard's vicious kick squirmed under the keeper and into the net. Pershore still battled hard but on the stroke of half time Town increased their lead with the best move of the match. Danny Carter came deep to collect the ball after a period of possession football. Carter spotted the overlapping run of Chris Gee and his inch perfect pass was quickly whipped into the centre where Craig Davies stretched to reach and push over the despairing dive of the keeper and into the net.
Coleshill took the game to the visitors in the second half and had several chances to increase the lead. Danny Carter saw his shot go just past the far post before Davies had a 1 on 1 tipped away for a corner. Carter broke free but a desperate lunging tackle blocked his shot, which spun up and over the keeper, hit the bar and rebounded to safety. A sweeping move involving Wagstaff, Davies then a Carter dummy, allowed Des Wilkes a free run at goal but his powerful shot went just wide. Davies side stepped his way through the defence and laid on for Carter to score but the effort was adjudged off side. Howard was denied his hat trick when his shot from a Carter lay off was well saved, and Chris Gee had a shot on the run go just over. Pershore had the last opportunity of the night as Howard was caught in possession near the corner flag. When the ball was returned to the centre the Pershore forward should have done better as his header went over the bar.

One sour note was the injury to Dean Farrington who was just returning to fitness after a long lay off. He was taken to hospital with a suspected broken toe and kept in overnight.

Team;- Craig Jones, Matt Ward, Steve Lees, Des Wilkes, Karl Jones, , Stuart Howard, Carl Smith, Dean Farrington (Chris Gee), Kevin Wagstaff, Craig Davies, Danny Carter. Subs not used Mark Hill James Lloyd.
