Pershore Town 2 v 1 Coleshill Town

Postby Alan Beckett » Sun Oct 24, 2004 2:35 pm

MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
SATURDAY 23rd OCTOBER 2004
PERSHORE TOWN 2 v 1 COLESHILL TOWN
Scorer: Steve Lees.

Coleshill started like a house on fire to try and get the defeat by Dudley out of their system and should have been three up in the first five minutes. Craig Davies caught a defender in possession and quickly released Danny Carter who chipped the rather small goalkeeper but saw his effort just go the wrong side of the post. Karl Jones cleverly brought the ball out of defence and released Carter wide on the right. Carter's cross was sliced by a defender, sliding in the terrible conditions, and the ball came quickly to Davies who shot wide. A long clearance by Steve Lees found Carter free whose shot on the run was always rising over the bar. The home team slowly started to come more into the game and is was a further 35 minutes before Coleshill had their next shot at goal, a distance effort by Stu Howard. In between Town lost the services of Craig Davies due to an ankle injury and the home team went two goals ahead. On 24 minutes a misunderstanding between Steve Lees and keeper Craig Jones saw the latter scramble back to clear the ball off the line, unfortunately the ball fell straight to Andy Hodgett who blasted into the roof of the net. Minutes later a run and cross from the left skimmed off Des Wilkes?s boot into his own net. With the half time looming Pershore could have increased their lead as Jones made a fine save then Lees just got back to make a saving tackle.
In the second half Coleshill forced the pace but the home side seemed to find their own players with unerring accuracy even from desperate clearances, whether this was down to luck or good player it's hard to say but bearing in mind Pershore's position in the league the former seems to be the more likely. The home keeper dropped a Mitchell Thompson cross at the feet of Josh McPherson but was quick enough to block the shot. Coleshill pushed forward but Pershore looked dangerous on the break, forcing several saves from Jones.

STU HOWARD FORCES A GOOD SAVE FROM THE KEEPER

Stuart Howard took a free kick from the edge of the box which the keeper palmed over. A blocked clearance left McPherson clear on goal but the keeper was quickly out to block at his feet. Kevin Wagstaff hit a sweet shot from 20yards that went just wide, but this was not to be Coleshill's day although they did get some reward for their hard work in the dying minutes. McPherson held up play to cleverly release Thompson who powered into the box and was pulled down.

STEVE LEES TAKES THE PEN

With Davies off the field, Steve Lees stepped up to take the penalty and although his first effort was saved the ball rebounded to him to easily tap home.
