Continental Star 1 v 2 Coleshill Town

Postby Alan Beckett » Sun Oct 31, 2004 4:18 pm

Midland Combination Premier Division
Saturday 30th October 2004
Continental Star 1 v 2 Coleshill Town
Scorers: Kevin Wagstaff, Mitchell Thompson.

With Craig Davies missing due to injury Manager Mick Beadle acted quickly to bring in 19 year old Luke Marcus to lead the line. The former West Bromwich and Kidderminster apprentice could have got off to the perfect start as his strike partner Danny Carter (also 19) pinched the ball off a slack defence in the opening seconds to feed the debutant who shot into the arms of the home keeper. And just to show how funny football can be, Marcus's next contribution was to be carried off following a clash with the keeper after only eight minutes and was unable to return.
Davies and then Marcus's presence up front was dearly missed as Continental's robust style thwarted the now tiny Town front line of Carter and Mitch Thompson but the pair had the last laugh as they combined in time added on to score the winner and secure all three points.
This was a game of many chances for both sides, Star guilty of missing the best of them, and Craig Jones making several fine saves but Danny Carter also wasted a host of opportunities that on another day would have yeilded the youngster a hat trick. Star took the lead on 28minutes when an initial Jones block fell at the feet of former Coleshill player Giovanni Finesci to fire into the roof of the net. Town had looked far from convincing at this point as Star grafted for every ball but Kevin Wagstaff levelled the scores on 31 mins when a Steve Lees free kick was half cleared but fell nicely for Wagstaff who sweetly found the top corner.

Although Town were unable to convert their chances it was rewarding to see them still create the opportunities when not playing that well.
Coleshill were much better in the second half as they forced the home team further and further back but Star's quick and powerful forwards were always a threat. Jones made another save to a vicious shot before the chance of the match. Des Wilkes normally so assured in defence, slipped over allowing a clear run at goal for the Star forward. The striker kept his head to round Jones but then sent his shot wide of the far post with the goal gaping. Coleshill continued pressing forward with Stu Howard and Danny Carter forcing saves.

Then in time added on for injury Carter got to the bye line, pulled the ball back to the near post and Mitchell Thompson got between defenders and keeper to force the ball home for the winner that sunk the home teams hearts.
