MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMEIR DIVISION
SATURDAY 18TH DECEMBER 2004
COLESHILL TOWN 3 v 0 ALVESTON
Scorers: Kevin Wagstaff 2, Des Wilkes.

Coleshill finally overcame a side they should easily beat but have had trouble doing so in recent times but they needed a stunning goal from in form Kevin Wagstaff to settle the nerves before running out comfortable winners.
Coleshill dominated lowly Alveston from the start but the visitors had a couple of half chances on the break and if one of them had gone in, the nerves would have started to jangle. Danny Carter looked lively throughout and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet. The young striker was the first to show as he turned neatly but shot weakly, then he turned again but his goalbound effort was deflected for a corner, Craig Davies heading over from the kick. Kevin Wagstaff who has been so influential this season took a knock on the head and looked down and out on the touch line. The midfielder returned after several minutes and immediately gained possession in, for him, the unusual position of right midfield. As Wagstaff drove forward the defence backed off and followed the intelligent diagonal run of Craig Davies. Suddenly a huge gap opened up and Wagstaff gleefully took advantage to progress then hit a left foot shot from 25 yards that curved away from the diving keeper and into the net. Alveston resorted to some rough play but the Referee soon stamped it out with a couple of bookings. Coleshill had all the play but the visitors so nearly equalised as the half time approached, their forward clearly pulling back Des Wilkes but was allowed to go on and his shot went just wide.
The best move of the game came early in the second half as Coleshill continued to take the game to the visitors. Carter and Davies exchanged passes to cleverly open up the defence but Matt Ward's cross failed to find it's target. Carter set up Chris Gee who looked certain to score from 3 yards out but his effort was diverted over the bar for a corner. From the resulting kick Danny Carter found himself in ocean's of space at the far post and his firm header was clearly a yard over the line before it was cleared but neither the linesman or the referee saw enough to give the goal and play was waved on. On 75 minutes the officials seemed to see a need to redeem themselves as Kevin Wagstaff's shot hit one post rolled along the line and hit the other before being cleared but this time the Assistant flagged for a goal. Alveston went wild, with justification, but between the two efforts Coleshill deserved to be in front. Alveston piled forward in an effort to get back into the game but it was too little too late. Coleshill broke from defence on 84 minutes, Des Wilkes leading the charge, and with four on one, there were several options for last season's Players Player of the Year. The option he chose was to go it alone and his shot beat the keeper from 15 yards.
