Saturday 19th February 2005
Midland Combination Premier Division
Coventry Sphinx 4 v 1 Coleshill Town
Scorer: Danny Carter.

Coleshill are still looking for their first win of 2005 but there were signs of better form to come against Sphinx. Mick Beadle's side are lacking confidence after a string of poor results since Christmas but can take heart from their performance against a strong side. "They are a very good team and have scored something like 60 goals in their last 16 games." said Beadle. "We played better than we have done for a while but we gave the ball away too cheaply and they punished us." Danny Carter scored late on but it was a mere consolation, however Beadle believes better times are ahead. "We will keep plugging away and I am sure we will turn the corner." he said. "Confidence is low but I think the squad is good enough to turn things round."
Sphinx stretched their unbeaten run to 18 games with this win as they chase a runners up spot. Sphinx dominated the opening period but had to wait until midway through the half before taking the lead. The left foot of Rob Stevenson was causing problems as he whipped in crosses and Paul John rifled in a Stevenson ball from a corner. Coleshill had defended well to this point and dissapointingly missed a chance to clear before John pounced. Chris Harris made the most of a Des Wilkes challenge to hit the ground in the penalty area and Stevenson converted for 2-0 just before the break. Soon after half time another pin point Stevenson free kick enabled the outstanding Jamie Towers to power a downward header into the net from five yards and the midfielder then turned provider as Towers' centre fell to Woods and he set up Harris for the fourth. Sphinx are possibly the best side we have faced this term, certainly the most powerfull, but Coleshill never gave up and in Danny Carter we have someone who can, if he gets ball to feet, create goals from nothing. His quick feet left the big defenders in his wake to create space for his goal although the game, as a contest, was well and truly over at that stage.
Coleshill's best performance of the season came in the 6-3 win over Sphinx at Pack Meadow at a time when the team were flying. Since then they have hit a brick wall and this time Sphinx gained sweet revenge with a solid, professional victory.

Team:-Miles Millington-Day, Steve Lees, Matt Ward, Josh McPherson, Des Wilkes, Kevin Wagstaff, Stuart Howard (Adrian Walker), Carl Smith (Danny Carter), Craig Davies, Mitchell Thompson, James Lloyd (Stuart McLaughlan).
