Saturday 26th March 2005
Midland Combination Premeir Division
Dudley Sports 2 v 1 Coleshill Town
Scorer: Kevin Wagstaff.

Coleshill's season took a nose dive in the space of a week following cup defeats to Meir and Dudley back in January. Wednesday's win at Meir went some way to getting revenge and Mick Beadle was hoping his side could finish the job by beating Dudley but Town's under pressure defence finally gave way under a constant barrage of corners and long balls.

Beadle made only one change from the Meir game, the injured Stuart Howard replaced by Chris Gee. Dudley started very aggressively with tackles flying in from everywhere and wasted no time in getting the ball forward at every opportunity. They already had several chances, a shot going wide and Miles Millington-Day tipping over for a corner, before Coleshill took the lead on 9 minutes against the run of play. Chris Gee's long clearance caught the defender in two minds. Unsure whether to head or kick back to his keeper, he chose the latter but overhit his pass. The keeper managed to parry the ball but only into the path of Kevin Wagstaff who duly rolled into an empty net. Day was definately the busier of the two keepers as he parried away for the first in a series of corners which all caused problems due to the height diference in the two teams. Davies fed Tim Lane whose shot was defected, Des Wilkes had a shot blocked and on another day it may have been given hand ball and another Wilkes shot was fumbled by the keeper who was lucky to re-gather, as Coleshill slowly started to come more into the game. At this stage it was Town's keep ball versus Sports long ball and for a time it looked as though Coleshill's patience would pay off but the home teams more physical style plus some ferocious encouragement from the management on the side lines gave them the upper hand. Dudley's corner count mounted up as Coleshill relied on the break away. Craig Davies turned his man near the corner flag to gain a free kick and Wagstaff's half cleared shot fell for Matt Ward who hit on the volley a rasping goal bound kick which was blocked. Day had to be alert as twice he came out of his box to clear and then tipped over the bar again. Alan Wright just managed to get to a ball before an attacker to clear from under the bar and Wagstaff cleared a header off the line as Dudley upped the pressure.

Coleshill started the second half well and a second goal at that time might have killed off the game. Tim Lane, Liam Daly and Chris Gee all had shots then Davies fed Wilkes who hit the side netting. But Dudley started to push Coleshill further back and the visitors goal came under siege. Day tipped over the bar twice more before Sports got their reward on the hour mark. Another long ball was missed by Matt Ward, Sports's Craig Gregg nipped in, rounded Day and shot home for 1-1. Corner after corner came and went, Day saved punched and kicked as Coleshill's rear guard held firm with only a Wagstaff shot into the keepers mid-drift as a reply. Following the brave defending is was dissapointing to concede a sloppy goal but on 77 minutes a speculartive punt from Dudley's No9 Jim Robinson seemed to go in slow motion as it evaded everyone, hit the post and went in. Town tried to get back into the game, Gee had a shot blocked and a Stuart McLaughlan strike went just wide, but it was to no avail as Dudley deservadly took all three points.

Team:- Miles Millington-Day, Alan Wright, Matt Ward, Frank Woodburn, Chris Gee, Carl Smith (Stuart McLaughlan), Liam Daly (Danny Carter), Kevin Wagstaff, Craig Davies, Tim Lane, Des Wilkes.
