Postby Alan Beckett » Fri May 06, 2005 4:34 pm

Monday 2nd May 2005
Midland Combination Premier Division
Coleshill Town 2 v 1 Feckenham
Scorers: Craig Davies, Kevin Wagstaff.

9th in the league, 61 points, as many wins as defeats and two cup quarter finals sums up the season and before a ball had been kicked, Manager Mick Beadle would have settled for that following last years 4th bottom finish. But the facts don't tell the whole story. Town were no lower than fourth, (even making second for a short period), for four months but hit a brick wall around the turn of the year. First half of the season figures show 37 points and 12 wins but the second half only reaped 24 points and seven wins, including a run of one point in eight games. If the first half results had been matched in the second, we would have finished on 74 points in sixth place. Mick Beadle is well on target with his steady progression over a three year period with Alliance football the ultimate aim and with a second and third team joining us next season he will have strength in depth, so the next target of converting a top ten finish into a top six should be achievable.

The game itself was an end of season affair with the visitors having saturday's Challenge Cup Final uppermost in their thoughts. Town had the better of the play but Feckenham were still keen to maintain their 17 match unbeaten run and when they scored on 65 minutes to reduce the arrears they started to pin Coleshill back and the home team were hanging on towards the end. Town had taken the lead on 17 minutes when Danny Carter's deep cross was met by Kevin Wagstaff on the stretch to squeeze in at the far post. The main contest of the afternoon was between Davies and Carter as to who would end up leading scorer. Both had chances to edge in front but it was Davies who finally took the honours but it was the hardest chance of three in quick succession that finally found the net. The visitors keeper saved well in a one on one, Davies flicked the ball over a defender but shot wide then on 55 minutes Davies repeated the flick but this time volleyed left foot into the back of the net. Feckenham had a good shout for a penalty turned down when a shot was blocked in the box and another good opportunity went just past the post but Coleshill held on to go over 60 points in the top flight for the first time since 1997.

Team-: Steve Lees, Chris Gee (James Lloyd), Matt Ward, Josh McPherson, Des Wilkes (Frank Woodburn), Stuart Howard (Lee Dempster), Carl Smith, Kevin Wagstaff, Craig Davies, Danny Carter, Mitchell Thompson.
