Allen’s Goal Lifts Coleshill

Despite injury problems Coleshill returned to winning ways in the First Division of the Midland Combination with a goal direct from a corner by Johnny Allen giving them the points. Eighteen year old Steve Raybould retained his place in goal and manager David Kite chose his other keeper Alan Goulden to lead the attack. Both players excelled and with Allen showing a welcome return to form in midfield scoring chances were created. Starkey, Montague and Kettrick all went close to giving Coleshill the lead in the first half, while strong right wing runs by Dawkins posed plenty of problems for the home defence. McGreevy, Davies and Burrows worked hard to stamp out occasional forward moves by Northfield, but Coleshill’s rearguard did look suspect in the air. Near the interval Northfield strove hard to take the lead. A through ball from Ormsby found Hearver clear and only a timely tackle by Burrows prevented a goal. Then a great save by Raybould thwarted an effort from Bean after Northfield had forced three corners in as many minutes. In the 65th minute it was Coleshill who gained the initiative as Allen’s flag kick curled into the net past stranded keeper Clorley. Bean was unlucky not to level matters for Northfield when his shot bounced twice on top of the cross bar, before going out of play. In the final quarter the hard working Goulden obviously tired and he was substituted by Silvester Collins. Coleshill held on to their lead, helped by the experienced Ray Starkey, who only last week turned down the chance of a move to West Midlands League side V.S.Rugby. Manager Kite’s efforts to sign Mick Burrows, brother of Coleshill’s centre half Harry Burrows from Coventry Colliery hit a snag this week, but definitely joining the Pack Meadow camp is 18 year old Andrew Canning, the son of former Aston Villa player Larry Canning, who has just been released by Walsall.
