Coleshill Town’s manager David Kite took his new look team to Alvechurch last Saturday (2nd February) and although the Southern League club won 2-0, there was little to choose between the teams in this friendly. Rhys Davies, recently returned to Lye Meadow for his third spell in charge of Alvechurch, said,”Coleshill proved to be a greatly improved side and certainly David Kite has done well in building up the strength of the midland Combination club.” One of the players catching the eye in the Alvechurch mud was Coleshill’s Nardiello, the brother of Coventry City’s Don.

It was a disappointing trip to Evesham for Coleshill Town. In the words of manager David Kite, “Coleshill never woke up until the second half.” Mr Kite said “It must have been our worst first half display of the season, but thankfully we improved after the interval and the penalty scored by Peter Dawkins was just reward for our efforts.” Two goals in 12 minutes from Kevin Walsh gave Evesham the edge, but in the second period they can thank goalkeeper Brookes for thwarting Coleshill’s strong attacks. Harry Burrows started in the heart of Coleshill’s defence, but they are obviously missing the services of injured players, Tom Hardie, Ray Hartry and Nigel Montague. Coleshill face another problem with the possible departure of Bob Starkey, who is wanted by West Midlands League club V.S.Rugby.

Coleshill Get Bogged Down
Coleshill were slow to settle down against a lively Evesham side, but even so could have gone if front when Starkey found himself unmarked, but headed over from a corner. Evesham, who have applied for membership of the West Midlands League next season, quickly took control and only a great save by Raybould from Millward prevented a goal. A strong wind and a muddy ground made it difficult for both sides, but Evesham’s attacks were always dangerous and Raybould was again in action, brilliantly cutting out a cross from Pace. A corner for Coleshill came to nothing as home keeper Brookes hung on to the ball at the second attempt and in the 35th minute the homesters jumped in front through Walsh, who scored from close range. Walsh was again on target 12 minutes later, hitting home a tremendous shot from the edge of the penalty area. Near the interval Coleshill threatened to reduce the deficit, but Brookes brought off a spectacular one handed diving save from Davies. An interval “pep” talk by manager David Kite instilled more purpose in Coleshill’s second half display and Dawkins saw a shot kicked off the line by Peacock, with Brookes beaten. Evesham still troubled Coleshill’s defence however, and while Harry Burrows starred in repelling attacks, Raybould was called into action, making another smart save from Millward. Then an Ingram header bounced off the Coleshill cross bar, before the visitors pulled a goal back with a penalty taken by Dawkins.
