Coleshill Back On Form And Destroy Moor's Away Record
Coleshill Town returned to their old form on Saturday when they destroyed Moor Green's unbeatenaway record in this Midland Combination Second Division game. This was without doubt, Coleshill's best display of the season and for the first time a "new formation" of three men across the back, four in midfield and three up front injected a winning streak that could still be strong enough to keep Coleshill amongst the leading group. It would be a little unfair to single out individuals, but it was the stout hearted display of the four men employed directly in the middle, Dave Back, Clive Lyons, Roy Phelps and Steve Ward, that cemented Town's clear cut victory that must regain a lot of lost confidence. Both sides needed time to settle down and once into their stride it was Coleshill who held the upper-hand and once in front never looked in danger of being defeated. The Moor's could boast of only one corner kick and only one real dangerous shot in the whole game. The Moor's heavy defeat began to take shape after only eight minutes when Coleshill hammered into the lead with a goal from Eddie Hanlon, Colin Davis won a midfield duel with Parsons, slipped the ball to Phelps, who in turn, put Hanlon clear to give Blackwell no chance. Moor Green were being kept at full stretch at the back and were lucky to survive further blow when Hanlon delivered a fine 20 yard shot that beat Blackwell only for the effort to be ruled aside with a Coleshill player being ruled offside. Moor Green's attack was non-existant as Coleshill pressed hard no doing better than Hanlon who was finding it easy to get clear of the opposition, and it was a pass from Phelps that enabled Hanlon to dash in to again leave the keeper helpless. Coleshill forced a hatfull of corner kicks to provide the Moor's goalmouth with plenty of action, the men behind it being Phelps and Hanlon, both men playing their best football of the season. It came as no surprise when Coleshill extended their lead in the 30th minute, the action commenced way in midfield where Lyons put Phelps in possession. The ball was presented to Steve Ward who quickly transferred it to Roy Sanders who crashed an almost unstoppable shot past the over worked Blackwell. Moor Green, with the game slipping away from them, made a few gallant attempts to unease the Town's solid formation but without any success. Half time arrived with Coleshill holding a well deserved 3-0 lead. The second half never really produced the crisp and fluent soccer displayed in the first period and this was mainly due to the fact that Coleshill slowed down, content naturally to rest on their laurels. Coleshill came hurtling back into the game with the fourth goal in the 63rd minute, Lyons raced through on the right flank, took a pass from Phelps, went through to avoid two defenders before turning the ball inside to Sanders, who, after stepping over it, calmly back-heeled it into the net, wide of the surprised Blackwell. coleshill were absolutely on top and the visitors goal had a miraculous escape within the next few minutes when, with Blackwell grounded, the ball bobbed about a packed goalmouth, Davis's header being chested off the line. Moor Green forced their first and only corner of the match in the 83rd minute but it came to nought and Coleshill trooped off holding tightly to their best success of the season which must hold with it hopes that it will prove no flash in the pan.
