COLESHILL CHRONICLE WROTE
Ample Revenge For Coleshill

Coleshill Town, twice beaten in Midland Combination games by Solihull Borough this season, gained ample revenge with an extra time victory in the F.A.Challenge Vase First Round on Saturday. In spite of an evolving superiority, the first half ended goalless. Borough's Ward was carried off after 15 minutes and substitute Cannon was not brought on for a further 7 minutes. Towards the end of the half Phil Dunn finally had to go off with an injury to his ribs, and Les Drinkwater went on to make a fine substitute. Borough are a more physical side than last season, but had their chances. Burnett had a shot go past the post after a good run through the middle, while Hudmanand Turner, with assistance from Rutleigh and Ward, tried early on to prize open the Town defence. Town's young keeper David Lawrence, playing in place of the injured John Capper, saved Town early on and gave an encouraging display between the posts. Lawrence made a fine save from a good header from Turner, tipping the ball over, following it up with another fine save from Cannon. Drinkwater was through on a run when Cartwright took his legs from under him, but the Referee, who started off well, deteriorated in his standard of decisions. Cartwright then upended Allcock in the area and the referee blew his whistle, apparantly for a penalty, then changed his mind and allowed play to continue. Coleshill started well in the second half, a McDonald cross being pushed past the post by Allcock, and seemed to be on top when a Borough break opened the scoring in the 51st minute. A Hudman corner from the left gave a chance which ricoched off the bar and Turner came in from the right to give Lawrance no chance. Four minutes later, Coleshill notched the equaliser, from a corner situation won on the right by McDonald. Hall took the corner, the ball came out and seemed to be cleared but fine recovery work returned the ball to Hall. The midfield maestro picked his spot delightfully and his well placed pass gave John Allcock a fine diving header which Shead had no chance of saving. Extra time was needed, however to confirm Coleshill's superiority. Borough did give Lawrence two more opportunities to prove his worth, however, once when he leapt sideways to claw a fine cross by Hudman out of the air, and seconds later when he jumped above a melee to two fist away a try by Holmes after Holmes should have scored with his first try. Coleshill turned the tables, however, and mid-way through the first period, from good work down the left by Town's midfield, Allcock moved in, slipped the ball round a defender and flighted it over Shead's head into the net for the winner. Coleshill had most of the rest of the game, although Hanlon cleared from Holmes But Allcock had two tries that could have brought further goals. The first time he put the ball over the bar with Snead running out. The second was typical of some of the exciting cup-tie football in this match. A Hudman corner was headed out by Coleshill, and Allcock set off on a run from the edge of his own area, beating player after player in a weave that took him to the edge of the Borough area, where his finishing shot was palmed away for a corner. Hall took the corner from the right, Drinkwater fired the ball towards goal but Shead tipped it over the bar at the last second for another corner.
