Saturday 31st January 2005
Midland Combination Premier Division
Coleshill Town 1 v 3 Coventry Sphinx
Scorer: Kevin Wagstaff.

Coleshill had a chance to pit themselves against one of the best sides in the league but left themselves a mountain to climb after a poor first half performance. Town dictated play in the second half and got back into the game with a Kevin Wagstaff header but Sphinx killed the game with a third goal with less than ten minutes remaining.

Several players were missing due to holiday committments but manager Mick Beadle was still able to pick a strong side. Sphinx had one eye on their bank holiday game against table topping Atherstone which could decide the championship. The opening exchanges were very even but Sphinx were full of confidence and started to get on top. The visitors had the ball in the net on 15 minutes but the effort was ruled out for offside. This proved to be just a minor let off for Coleshill as only three minutes later Sphinx did take the lead. There looked to be no danger with the ball wide out on Town's right but somehow the ball was squeezed into the danger area and Chris Harris srcambled the ball home with several fingers being pointed at a static defence. Coleshill's Jeckyl and Hyde season continued as they once ahain failed to produce the goods and Sphinx took advantage to increase the lead on 24 minutes. With probably the best move of the game several one two's cut open the home defence and P.J Gordon finished the move off. Coventry had the ball in the net again on 39 minutes with the Referee prepared to give the goal but with Coleshill complaining the official finally decided to consult his linesman and eventually disallowed the effort.. David Brush chased down a clearence from the keeper and crossed for Dan Greaves to head goalward but the keeper had got back into his ground and saved easily. Coleshill finished the half forcing a series of corners but still failed to seriously test the visitors goal.

Town finally decided to make a game of it in the second half as Alan Wright, David Brush and later James Dance started to show how good they can be but don't perform consistantly. Following two corners the ball fell to Dance who hit the ball powerfully but the effort was always rising over the bar. Miles Day came way out of his area and failed to make a clearance, but did really well to get back and stop a certain goal at the expense of a corner. A Brush free kick was half cleared to Carl Smith who had a shot well saved and a Kevin Wagstaff cross was cleared from under the bar as Coleshill pinned back the visitors. A speculartive cross from scorer PJ Gordon had to be tipped over the bar by Day as it threatened to sneak in, and then the Coleshill stopper made a fine save from Sphinx's substitute Wayne Pulford. A clever through ball by Rob Ellis released Dan Greaves who crossed into the danger area and with Sphinx panicking, two shots were blocked before Wagstaff shot over. Greaves fed Brush who lobbed the advancing keeper but put the effort just the wronf side of the post. Coleshill deserved some reard for their second half efforts and it finally came with only ten minutes remaining. Sphinx's defence had struggled to handle David Brush and the striker crossed for Kevein Wagstaff to send a looping header over the diving keeper and just under the bar. Coleshill looked the more likely to score next but within a minute the visitors killed the game with the third goal by prolific scorer Wayne Pulford. Coleshill continued to battle but they looked deflated and only managed a diving header from Sean Burrell which sailed over.

Team;- Miles Millington-Day, Alan Wright, Des Wilkes, Sean Burrell, Ryan Garndner, Rob Ellis, Kevin Wagstaff, Carl Smith, Dan Greaves (Myrone Levy), David Brush, James Dance. Subs not used Simon Bradbury, Lee Dempster.
