Coleshill Town 3 v 1 Shifnal Town

Saturday 1st April 2006
Midland Combination Premier Division
Coleshill Town 3 v 1 Shifnal Town
Scorers: Kevin Wagstaff, Danny Carter, Shane Higgins.

It was Coleshill's young mini-goal machines that won this game with an effort apiece before half time but this was an allround impressive performance against the league's second meanest defence. Manager Mick Beadle decided that he could not play both Danny Carter and Shane Higgins together as they are too similar and too small. He needed a big man to play along side either goal getter and Shaun Kidson filled the gap. Experienced Kidson, holds the ball, links the attack and midfield and talks the younsters through the game. He has been instrumental in the wins over Southam, Cadbury, Dudley and now Shifnal in recent games and was a big miss in the defeats against Bridgenorth and Atherstone. Coupled with this new attacking partnership has been the consistant improvement of the back line which has included Simon Bradbury, Ryan Gardner and Des Wilkes in front of Chris Butler in goal, for the last seven matches. They now look like a unit which is capable of keeping clean sheets.

Carter got the nod over Higgins due to hitting five goals in five games and he made that six in six with only ten minutes on the clock. Carter chased down a through ball and slid the ball under the advancing keeper to give Coleshill the lead. The in form striker nearly repeated the feat minutes later but this time he missed the target and at the same time pulled a hamstring and had to be replaced by Higgins. Shifnal showed how they have achieved seventh place in the league by playing some impressive football and it came as no surprise when they equalised on 26 minutes but the goal was rather fortunate. A good move ended at the feet of overlapping full back Andy Hitchcroft but his left foot shot looked to be going well wide until it hit Simon Bradbury and left Chris Butler stranded before crossing the line. As an end to end first half came to a close Kidson held off his marker and shot for goal. The shot was blocked but fell to the feet of Shane Higgins who slammed the ball home from eight yards and celebrated his first senior goal with a back flip.

An entertaining game continued in the same vein in the second half but Coleshill always had the better chances and more possession and went further ahead from the penalty spot. Kidson again caused the visitors defence problems and as he held his ground he was tussled to the floor. Kevin Wagstaff converted the kick for his fourteenth of the season. Shifnal had two glorious chances to get back into the game but both efforts ended up in the farm at the far end of the ground. Coleshill's best chance to increase the lead was set up by Josh McPherson for Dan Greaves to hit a thundering shot that hit the foot of the post.
This was the hardest game on paper for Town's run in to the end of the season and on this showing they are capable of remaining undefeated for the last seven games.

Team:- Chris Butler, Simon Bradbury, Des Wilkes, Ryan Gardner, Dan Greaves, Kevin Wagstaff (David Brush), Josh McPherson, Carl Smith (Mitchell Thompson), Shaun Kidson, Danny Carter (Shane Higgins), James Dance. Sub not used Rob Ellis.
