SATURDAY 9th SEPTEMBER 2006
F.A.VASE 1st ROUND QUALIFYING
STAVELEY MINERS WELFARE 0 v 5 COLESHILL TOWN
Scorers: David Brush 4, Ryan Gardiner.

Coleshill were looking for a repeat of last years good run in the FA Vase but faced the daunting task of the long trip to Chesterfield to play Staveley who are one step above them on the non-league pyramid system. Coupled with the home teams unbeaten start to the season Mick Beadle's men seemed to have their work cut out but the game turned on 25 minutes when Coleshill were awarded a penalty and the goalkeeper sent off. Staveley battled manfully from then on but the final result was never in doubt.

Ian Bluck, Simon Volante and Shaun Kidson all came straight into the starting line up with the team having a much better shape about it from the start as Town took the game to the opposition on a lovely playing surface. The two centre mid field players for Staveley put themselves about with some heavy and sometimes nasty tackles but Coleshill kept their heads and started to play some neat football. A high Bluck clearance down the right channel saw Shaun Kidson cut inside his marker and shoot from an acute angle, his effort coming back off the post. Volante had a shot go wide before Staveley's best effort so far was parried by Greg Allen then block saved away for a corner. Another long clearance was headed on by Kidson and David Brush went past the home teams giant centre half and then as he rounded the keeper he was brought down for a penalty. The referee took some time before producing a red card for the stopper and with a new keeper between the sticks David Brush netted in off the post. Staveley had their best period for the next ten minutes and Greg Allen made two fine saves before Josh McPherson was denied from point blank range by a great save from the stand in keeper. On 40 minutes the home team half cleared a Coleshill corner but the ball fell to Ryan Gardiner who kept his shot low and hard and it found the net through several pairs of feet.

Coleshill started the second half poorly, giving the ball away too easily but they finally put a move together and Brush hit a Kidson cross into the side netting. A James Dance cross to the far post was collected easily by the keeper but his quick throw out was intercepted by Josh McPherson who pulled back to Brush to pick his spot for Coleshill's third on the hour. Staveley had planty of possession and made Allen work a couple of times but it was the visitors who always looked the more likely to score. On 68 minutes a long dropping ball was misjudged by both keeper and defender to leave Brush to walk the ball into an empty net then a minute later Brush block tackled the keeper outside his box and again as the ball broke kindly he ran the ball into the unguarded net. McPherson and Rob Ellis both had good chances to increase the scoring but the main action, with only three minutes left on the clock was the dismissal of James Dance for kicking out at an opponent.

Mick Beadle said, "They tried to bully us in the first twenty minutes with some rough tactics but I thought we were just getting on top when we got the penalty and obviously the keeper being sent off made our task easier. We played much better than last week against Sphinx and I'm looking for a repeat of this performance against Griff and Cadbury's this week."

Team: Greg Allen, Allan Wright, Ryan Gardiner, Rob Hipkiss, Ian Bluck (Des Wilkes), James Dance, Josh McPherson, Simon Volante (Rob Ellis), David Brush, Shaun Kidson (Carlos McIntosh), Kevi Wagstaff. Subs not used Carl Smith, Dan Greaves.
