MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
MASSEY FERGUSON 2 v 1 COLESHILL TOWN
Scorer: Danny Carter.
Coleshill lost their third league game of the season away to a much improved Massey Ferguson side but even with a make shift defence, this was a good performance, probably the best so far this season, and a defeat was not what they deserved. Two penalty appeals, hit the bar and the post and no less than seven desperate clearances off the line was an indication of Coleshill's dominance especially in the second half but the home side made the most of the few opportunities that came their way.
Mick Beadle already struggling for defenders, lost Rob Hipkiss three hours before kick off. Kevin Wagstaff came in to the unfamiliar role of full back and Simon Volante took his place at left wing back, again a position alien to the central midfielder.
The game started on a superb playing pitch that must have been watered beforehand as the players struggled to keep their feet and the ball zipped off the wet surface. Coleshill took the game to Massey from the off, Raddi Richards having a shot blocked in a packed box from a corner. Richards was having one of his best games in a Coleshill shirt and caused problems down the right and then nearly got clear on goal down the middle. On ten minutes Rob Ellis cleared and everyone switched off thinking the ball had gone out for a throw in but Massey retrieved the ball cut along the bye line and pulled back into the path of midfield runner Kyle Rhodes who finished with a sweet strike into the corner of the net. The home team should have made it two as the pacey right winger powered past Wagstaff and flicked over Butler but into the side netting. Richards was soon back hitting the Massey bar then in a sustained period of play by Town the ball was cleared off the line twice with efforts from Simon Volante and Josh McPherson then the later was upended whilst swinging to shoot but the Ref waved play on. Both Wagstaff and Dance got in behind the defence but their crosses failed to find their intended targets. Volante?s shot was deflected for a corner and a Dance effort went just wide as Coleshill finished the half well on top.
Within a minute of the restart Coleshill's deficit was doubled as Ryan Gardiner made one mistake in an otherwise faultless display, missing a long threw ball which Callum Dempsey capitalised on. The forward still had lots to do as Alan Wright got back to challenge but the forward slipped past both defender and goalkeeper to finish. Coleshill rallied, Dance shot wide, Carlos McIntosh somehow headed away from goal when on the line. A shot from a corner was cleared off the line and a follow up shot from Wagstaff blocked, before McIntosh shot just wide. Massey still looked dangerous on the break as their forwards were full of running but the now back three held firm apart from one good move that finished with Chris Butler diving full length to palm away for a corner, the resulting kick being blasted over the bar from 3 yards out, then minutes later a shot from distance went well over and Chris Butler's clearance hit the back of Alan Wright, fell to a forward who chipped over Butler but luckily wide as well.
That was it from Massey as Coleshill played the last twenty minutes camped in the home team's half. Rob Ellis, another player having his best game for a while, fed Richards who back heeled into the path of substitute Danny Carter who finished at the near post.. McIntosh had a shot blocked and Wagstaff's effort was punched away by a desperate keeper. Then Wagstaff had a header cleared off the line with the keeper beaten. McIntosh hit the foot of the post and from a corner the ball was cleared off the line yet again. Ellis fed Carter inside the box and although the keeper came out to claim he clipped the forward first. The Referee raised his whistle toward his mouth then changed his mind and waved play on. There was still time for yet another Wagstaff shot to be cleared off the line for the seventh time as the Referee added on a massive two minutes for Massey's time wasting tactics.
Mick Beadle said "This was probably our best performance and if we can keep this up we will win more than we lose. Massey our a much better side than in recent years but we should have won this game with some to spare."
Team;- Chris Butler, Rob Ellis, Alan Wright, Ryan Gardiner, Kevin Wagstaff, James Dance, Josh McPherson, Carl Smith, Simon Volante (Danny Carter), Raddi Richards, Carlos McIntosh. Subs not used Mark Ward, Lee Bloxham.
