Alvechurch 1 v 0 Coleshill Town - FA Vase

Postby Alan Beckett » Mon Oct 09, 2006 6:53 pm

SATURDAY 7th OCTOBER 2006
F.A. VASE 1ST ROUND PROPER
ALVECHURCH 1 V 0 COLESHILL TOWN

Coleshill travelled to Alvechurch in the 1st round of the FA Vase with nothing to lose. Town had already come through two rounds with two fine wins which healthily topped up the bank account and now faced a team in a higher league who had disposed of the current best team in the Mid Com, Coventry Sphinx, 5-1 in the previous round. On top of that Manager Mick Beadle was without eight first choice players due to suspensions and injuries, and so fielded a very young and inexperience side. Alvechurch were exactly the opposite. Big, strong, physical, experienced. The epitome of an Alliance side.

The opening exchanges went to form with the home team making all the running and Coleshill?s back four struggling to come to terms with the power, pace and movement of Church?s forwards. The writing was on the wall as Craig Pountney pulled clear of the back line but luckily took an air shot. But with only six minutes gone Keith Rosthill sprang the line again and although Greg Allen came quickly off his line to block the shot, the ball fell kindly back at Rosthill?s feet and he shot home despite two Coleshill defenders on the line. Alvechurch then went on to squander several chances, Pountney being the main offender, and should have been out of sight by the break. Coleshill did have their chances however, a Josh McPherson header from a Dan Greaves cross went just wide and a Rob Ellis cross was flicked on by Danny Carter but the ball hit the post and sprang up nicely to the keeper who hadn?t moved from the spot.

Whether Alvechurch took their foot off the gas or Coleshill came to terms with their forwards is hard to say but Church were much less of a threat in the second half and Town enjoyed most of the possession without being able to find the killer ball in the final third. Danny Carter was a constant threat despite being marked by a centre half at least twice his size and he twice had claims for hand ball penalties. But the best chance of the half was another penalty appeal that looked stone wall. Carter was again involved as he jinked in and out with the ball tied to his feet. The little striker finally shot but his effort was blocked and as Carl Smith went for the rebound he was unceremoniously bundled to the ground. The Referee who had had very few difficult decisions to make, was right infront of the action but waved play on much to the disgust of the visiting team. Alvechurch threatened once or twice but with no real conviction as Coleshill Town?s F.A.Vase run came to an end for another season.

Team;- Greg Allen, Rob Ellis, Alan Wright, Ryan Gardiner, Rob Hipkiss, Des Wilkes (Simon Volante), Dan Greaves (Daryl Higgins), Josh McPherson, Carl Smith, Raddi Richards, Danny Carter. Sub not used Mark Ward.
