Midland Combination Premeir Division
Walsall Wood 0 v 3 Coleshill Town
Scorers: Danny Carter 2, David Brush.
Michael Campbell, Greg Allen, James Dance, Ryan Gardner, Joe Clarke and Simon Volante, all 1st team regulars, were missing from Mick Beadle's squad but once again the advantage of having a successful reserve team has been a massive bonus for this record breaking season. Even with the depleted workforce, Coleshill were still too strong for Walsall Wood and with a score line of 3-0 at half time the margin of victory could have been much bigger.
Coleshill were 2-0 up before ten minutes had passed and the now leading goalscorer Danny Carter scored them both. With only four minutes on the clock Chris Butler kicked the ball from his hands well down the field, Carter controlled the ball with an excellent first touch and shot home from the edge of the box. Three minutes later Kevin Wagstaff, making his first appearance since November, slotted a through ball to Carter who from the penalty spot picked the only place through a crowded goal line to find the back of the net. Coleshill dominated the remainder of the half with Walsall having little effect in the danger area's. Seyi Morgan was unfortunate to score on a couple of occassions but the home keeper produced good saves. With the half coming top a close David Brush whipped a free kick into the net from the corner of the penalty box for a comfortable three goal lead at the interval.
The second half was pretty much a non event with the result never in doubt. Wood had their one and only chance with a header but Chris Butler saved well. Seyi Morgan had a further two clear cut chances to break his duck in this game and Dominic Reece, Danny Carter and David Brush all should have increased the lead when well placed but another three points and another clean sheet were more than welcome. Coleshill have now won more games (23) then ever before in their thirty one years in the top flight of the Mid Com and now go to Castle Vale on Tuesday with the knowledge that the winner will almost certainly end up runners up to the now confirmed champions Coventry Sphinx.
Team:- Chris Butler, Rob Hipkiss (Scott Wilson), Ian Bluck (Carl Smith), Sam Chatwin, Dominic Reece, Josh McPherson, Raddi Richards, David Brush, Seyi Morgan, Danny Carter, Kevin Wagstaff (Ben Usher).
WALSALL WOOD 0 v 3 COLESHILL TOWN.
Wood gave the visitors a 2 goal start and the team decimated by injury and suspensions tried hard to get back into the game and probably shaded the 2nd half but couldn't make that final breakthrough to put Coleshill under real pressure.
With both sides feeling each other out if came as a surprise when after 4 minutes keeper Butler launched a long clearance into the Wood half, Carter collected the ball in his stride, ran at the Wood defence and calmly scored with a crisp cross shot.
Wood should have equalised immediately, a neat passing movement by Scott Cooper and Craig Timmins saw a ball played up to Pete Robinsons flicked header put Corey Pearce clear on the left edge of the box, he tried to lob the advancing keeper but put his effort well side.
2 minutes later a ball into the box was misread by a defender, Wagstaff collected the ball on the left of the box and rolled the ball across for Carter to fire home from 10 yards. he should have completed his hat trick on 17 minutes, from a right wing corner dropped perfectly to him 15 yards out and he fired high over. 27 minutes and a clever ball by Morgan put Carter racing into the box, only for Paul Curtin to make a superb saving tackle to deny him a shooting chance. After 44 minutes it was game over, Bluck delivered a left wing free kick into the Wood 6 yard box and McPherson touched the ball home from 5 yards. Right on the whistle Town ripped through the Wood defence, Morgan raced into the box and Colin Boyle made a great save.
From their first attack of the second half Wood nearly scored, a throw in on the left found Cooper, whose cross dropped right under the bar, keeper Butler pushing the ball over the top. From the corner, Pearce got in front of his marker at the near post and put a header just wide. On 49 minutes, Timmins fed Whitehead who cleverly found Robinson whose ball through the defence put Pearce one on one with keeper Butler, who made a brave save.
The ball was played to the other end and Morgan was clear, Boyle taking the pace off his shot and Paul Curtin completed the clearance.
On 54 minutes, Pearce won a left wing corner, and again put a header narrowly wide.
The visitors reply saw a bout of one touch football give Carter another chance but this time he fired wide. 58 minutes and a great diagonal ball by Brush put Reece clear on the left, he ran on and fired a cross shot well over.
Back came Wood, a clever ball out wide by Cooper was collected in stride by Jack Haynes to run on and hit a shot over the advancing Butler and the bar. With 75 minutes gone, Whitehead charged down a clearance by Butler, he chased the ball out wide to the left and returned the ball into the box, Robinson had raced 40 yards to make ground but travelling at speed he put his header agonisingly wide.
The last shooting chance of the game came on 83 minutes, Reece won a left wing corner and the ball dropped perfectly for Brush to hit first time, the shot was deflected and Boyle had to change direction to pull off a great save.
A patched up Wood side gave the visitors a dream start, conceding 2 goals in a three minute spell at the start, but then marshalled by veteran defender Steve Moore, they could have upset the form books in the second half, but the ball just wouldn't go into the opposition net. So the scoreline looks as if it was an easy 3 points for the potential runners up, but it wasn't the stroll in the sunshine they expected after that first cruel 8 minutes.
