Midland Combination Premier Division
Heath Hayes 2 v 2 Coleshill Town
Scorers: Michael Campbell 2.

It's funny how a massive part of football is played with the mind rather than the feet. So when the (caretaker) manager tells you to treat the game the same way as any other you can't help thinking that this is a lucky ground for us (never lost) and we are playing the team who are bottom of the league. Then you score the simplest of goals with only three minutes gone, hey, happy days, switch off and wait for a cricket score. Well it turns out that Heath Hayes are not a bad side, not great but they won't finish bottom! They worked harder than us and carved open our defence to go 2-1 up after only ten minutes and it could have been worse. Coleshill were thankfull to Micky Campbell to go into the break level when it wasn't really what we deserved.

Colin Strong and Neil Kitching went for the same starting eleven and the same 4-4-2 formation and when Campbell got to a through ball before the keeper and rolled the ball into an empty net everything was going to plan. James Dance and Danny Carter both had shots at goal as Coleshill made the perfect start and Hayes defence looked slow and cumbusome. But on 5mins the home side levelled with their first attack. Liam Wallis got in behind our defence and his cross fell perfectly for the onrushing Alan Haycock to smash into the roof of the net from 4yards out. On ten minutes Rob Hipkiss tried to shield a harmless ball out for a goal kick but Haycock pinched the ball and crossed for his strike partner Warren Inskip to side foot home. At this point you could drive a bus through our defence and Hayes took full advantage looking capable of scoring everytime they came forward. Town were snapping and argueing with each other as confidence drained and panic took over. Greg Allen came racing out of his box, but No7 got there before him only to see his cross come shot go over the bar. Wallis went closer as his cross hit the bar then Haycock saw a left foot shot hit the post. In between Inskip headed over twice from corners when unchallenged. On 35 minutes Coleshill finally got back into the game thanks to the power of Campbell. Simon Volante and James Dance combined to set up Campbell but with his back to goal he still had a lot to do. He held off his marker turned and shot in one movement up and over the keeper into the far corner of the net.

After a half time team talk (bollocking) and a change of formation to 3-5-2 Coleshill dominated the second half but could not get passed a resulute defence now with their tails up. The best chance of the half fell to Dance but his goal bound effort hit Campbell and was scrambled clear. Town finally made the home keeper earn his corn but he was up to the challenge as he finger tipped away a Danny Carter shot, then saved from Brush and Carter again. Coleshill had the ball in the net twice but both Campbell's and Dance's efforts were judged off side. Heath Hayes substitute No15 could have won the game for his side but his deflected effort hit the post. The game continued at a pace with Coleshill pressing but Hayes dangerous on the break. Rob Hipkiss thought he'd scored from a corner but his shot was deflected over the bar and in the dying minutes Hayes could have been awarded a penalty as a clumsy challenge from Ryan Gardiner sent a forward sprawling.

A dent in the perfect start for the cartaker management and with the job being advertised this week the next few weeks are going to be uncertain but the challenge must be maintained if the new boss is going to have a chance of promotion this term. Plikington and Pershore are coming up soon and they will be much tougher than the last three opponents.
