Pilkington XXX 2 v 3 Coleshill Town

Postby Alan Beckett » Mon Sep 10, 2007 10:07 am

SATURDAY 8th SEPTEMBER 2007
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
PILKINGTON XXX 2 v 3 COLESHILL TOWN
Scorers: Josh McPherson, Danny Carter 2.

This was to be the biggest test so far for stand in management team Colin Strong and Neil Kitching as Pilkington should finish in the top six. They, allegedly, had several players missing and they were in truth disappointing but after a confident and convincing start, Coleshill had to work really hard to secure all three points.
The 3-5-2 system was preferred again mainly due to the absence of Rob Hipkiss (suspension), Raddi Richards came into the centre of midfield in place of Simon Volante who dropped to the bench and Dan Greaves made his first start of the season wide right. New signing from Racing Club Warwick, Jake Sammons, took a place on the bench.
Coleshill started brightly. James Dance shot wide from 25 yards and again when set up by a David Brush free kick. Michael Campbell made a great run down the left flank and his cross was heading for the unmarked Danny Carter but a defender got back just in time. A Campbell header was parried and a Brush follow up shot tipped over the bar. Josh McPherson powerfully headed over from the corner. Pilkington’s best player by far, Kevin Brookes, shot over as a sighter for what was to come later. On 21 mins Coleshill got the reward for their dominance. The home team’s captain tried to shield the ball but Josh McPherson stole the ball and quickly moved it onto Carter. As the striker went passed one man, the whole defence opened up for him to casualty stroke the ball home. Ryan Gardiner broke up a move and continued to push forward but when the move broke down Pilkington moved the ball quickly to Brookes who took advantage of the defensive gap by cutting inside and shooting from distance across Allen in the Coleshill goal and into the net for 1-1. Dance had a shot pushed away for a corner before Town’s defence stood looking for offside and Gardiner did well to clear for a corner. But the defender did even better when James Francis had a shot parried by Allen only for the ball to fall to No8 who had a great chance to give the home team the lead just before half time but Gardiner threw himself at the ball and then got back up quickly to clear. Raddi Richards headed a high clearance just wide.
Town started the second half on fire. Dance crossed and Carter flicked the ball onto the bar. Campbell held off his marker inside the box and crossed for Carter who had all the time in the world to roll the ball past the stranded keeper for the lead, and the striker could have had his hat trick but shot over when well placed. Brookes jincked into the box and his shot was scrambled clear by Allen and Ray Scandrett combined. On 58 mins James Hands got clear down the left flank and his dangerous cross was rifled into the net by the onrushing James Francis, for the equaliser. Campbell flicked onto Carter who jincked in and out before shooting and the keeper did well to deny the striker his and Coleshill’s third goal. Pilkington where starting to dominate the midfield and a double substitution to shore up the Town defence came on 62 mins. Simon Volante and Jake Sammons came on for Richards and Greaves. The move worked as Coleshill took the lead on 66mins. Campbell’s shot was pushed away for a corner which was took short to Carter. His cross went deep to Brush who volleyed back into the danger area where captain McPherson turned and shot in one movement finding the corner of the net. Pilkington got the ball forward quickly in an effort to get back into the game. A ball bounced awkwardly over Scandrett leaving Brookes a clean run at goal but Allen saved his shot. Campbell had a shot saved but it was XXX who were pushing for the next goal but Town’s defence, now in 4-5-1 formation, held firm.
Interviews for the Managers job are to take place this week but Strong and Kitching have kept Coleshill in the hunt with three wins and a draw in their four games in charge.
