Coleshill Town 2 v 1 Feckenham
Scorers: Ryan Gardiner, James Dance.
After only eight league games Coleshill have hit top spot, the hard part is to stay there for the remainder of the season. Last season Town had to wait until mid November, 17 league games, to lead the championship race and although they only remained on top for seven games, they never dropped out of the top four. Coleshill are above Pershore by two points but they have a game in hand and while Town play Bolehall in the Vase next week, Pershore use up that game with a trip to Meir. The following week both teams are away mid-week, Pershore to Southam and Town to Walsall Wood, before the two sides meet on Saturday 29th September.
Coleshill were expected to win the game against Feckenham but as well as they played Wednesday against Barnt Green, this was the opposite and a real struggle from start to finish. Feckenham had few chances but worked dogedly all over the pitch and seemed to cope easily with Coleshill's normally potent strike force of Campbell and Carter. Ryan Gardiner proved to be the match winner late on for only his second goal for the club in 66 appearances.
Manager Carl Adams kept faith with the team that won at Spartak so new signing from Stratford, Richard Kavanagh took a place on the bench. The pitch was bone hard on a dry and sunny day making the ball difficult to get down and play. Feckenham started the better of the two teams but for all their possession and impressive play they rarely carved out a decent chance. Coleshill finally started to get the upper hand. Danny Carter shot wide before the best move from side to side of the eighteen yard box ended with David Brush shooting just wide. Simon Volante working hard in midfield released Carter down the left channel and as the keeper came out DC went past the stopper and crossed but the ball was desperately cleared off the line. A mazy run by James Dance deserved more than the shot that went wide of the post. Feckenham had a free kick just out side the penalty area which had to be blocked and then cleared for a corner then Chris Butler made a fine save from a header by Adam Guest as the visitors enjoyed their best spell. Volante released Dance with a clever ball and the keeper just got his fingers to a cross which was begging to be put away.
Coleshill started the second half brighter as Campbell had a shot blocked at his feet by the Feckenham keeper and then Campbell got to the bye line, crossed for the waiting Carter but a defender just got there first. Jake Sammons and Simon Volante combined down the right for the latter to cross. The ball was half cleared but James Dance kept the move going and shot through a sea of bodies and legs finding the corner of the net with the keeper unsighted and static. 1-0 with 51 minutes gone. Sammons shot on the run and Dance had a shot blocked as Coleshill pressed for a second. Shaun Maynard had time and space but dragged his shot across goal for the visitors and Sammons had a goal bound header blocked as the game opened up. On 67 minutes Rob Hipkiss tried to head back to his keeper but appeared to get a push in the back by Mathew Hill who moved the ball onto Shaun Maynard who took advantage as he, although still surrounded by players turned and shot over Butler into the top corner of the net. Feckenham had chances to win it, Simon Volante blocking one shot and a header from a corner going wide. Richard Kavanagh was introduced and immediatly upped the tempo. His bye line cross was just cleared, then he combined with Carter to set up Campbell whose shot was well saved. Coleshill looked for a penalty as a Kristian Kelsall's cross appeared to hit an arm. Kavanagh's free kick was pushed onto the bar by the now overworked keeper and cleared and Campbell forced another corner which eventually brought the winner with time running out. Kavanagh crossed to the far post where Ryan Gardiner headed down into the ground the ball bouncing over the keeper and several players on the line and into the net. With only minutes left Coleshill did well to keep possession right in the corner of the park tosecure the three very valuable, if not convincing, points.
Team:- Chris Butler, Sam Chatwin, Rob Hipkiss, Ryan Gardiner, Jake Sammons (Richard Kavanagh), Josh McPherson, Simon Volante, David Brush (Kristian Kelsall), Michael Campbell, Danny Carter (Oluwaseyi Morgan), James Dance. Subs not used Neil Kitching, Raddi Richards.
