Castle Vale 2 v 2 Coleshill Town

Postby Alan Beckett » Fri Dec 28, 2007 5:37 pm

Wednesday 26th December 2007
Midland Combination Premier Division
Castle Vale 2 v 2 Coleshill Town
Scorers: Brian Gray, James Dance pen.

Games between the two local rivals are always competitive but this was an ideal opportunity for Coleshill to gain bragging rights as Vale were crippled with injuries and suspentions. Town went 2-0 up after only 22 mins and a convincing win was on the cards but Vale never gave up and Coleshill produced a lacklustre second half performance which resulted in them hanging on for a point rather than leaving with all three.

Brian Gray found the back of the net with only 80 seconds gone. Kristain Kelsall lifted the ball over a slow, flat, back four and Gray ran clear and slotted the ball past the Vale keeper. On 22 mins Matty Robinson left the defence in his wake, attempted to round the keeper but went down and was awarded a penalty. The Vale keeper protested long and hard but if the decision was wrong it was par for the course as the referee had a shocker with both sides frustrated by his lack of control. James Dance stepped up to take the pen and finished confidently for a deserved 2-0 lead. A third would have killed the game off and Robinson came closest but his shot went high and wide when well placed. Vale hauled themselves back into the game on 32 mins but the referee was again the centre of attention. Brian Gray appeared to foul his marker in gaining possession but play was waved on. Ten yards further up the field Gray was fouled himself and when the whistle blew everyone walked away expecting a Coleshill free kick. Vale noticed first that the award had gone the other way and quickly took the kick, Campbell nodded over a static defence and keeper and Shane Benjamin forced the ball home from a scramble in the box. The game opened up with Dance having a shot blocked and a fair shout for hand ball and Vale's Tom Campbell shot just past the post after a fine run.

The second half was a total bore! Coleshill were unrecognisable from the first half as they sat back and allowed the home team to come at them. Neil Kitching and Andy Sutherland stood out above the rest and defended stoutly but Coleshill gave the ball away time and time again. Benjamin had a couple of chances, Kean shot wide, King had the ball in the net but the effort was dissallowed for pushing as Coleshill looked to hang to the points. Vale finally found the net on 83 mins but it was a soft one as the ball should have been cleared well before it arrived to Mark Swann who squeezed his shot between the post and the diving Butler in the Coleshill goal. It could have been a whole lot worse as Christian Crisp, who had been unusually quiet, fluffed a golden chance right at the death.

All in all a game to instantly forget but a vast improvement is required if Coleshill are to maintain a challenge all the way to the end of the season.

Team:- Chris Butler, Andy Sutherland, Neil Kitching, Richard Kavanaugh, Sam Chatwin, James Dance, Ryan Scott (Josh McPherson), Kristian Kelsall, Brian Gray, Matty Robinson (Danny Carter), Stuart Adamson (Simon Volante). Subs not used Michael Campbell, Lee Hunt.
