Walsall Wood 1 v 3 Coleshill Town

Postby Alan Beckett » Mon Feb 11, 2008 2:19 pm

Saturday 9th February 2008
Midland Combination Premier Division
Walsall Wood 1 v 3 Coleshill Town
Scorer: Matty Robinson 2, Neil Kitching pen.

This game was always going to be tough as Wood had beaten Town just over a month ago, but Coleshill have found a bit of bottle recently and now look capable of winning physical games which previously they were found wanting. Manager Carl Adams chose an unchanged squad, a very rare occurrence, but new signing Lee Millard was present and should be available saturday after a run out with the reserves mid week. Steve Smith, a winner in all three games since his transfer, returned to his old stamping ground to a not so warm reception.

The poor pitch didn't help either side in a mostly forgettable first half but it was the home side that had the better chances. Simeon Tulloch caused all sorts of problems down the right with his pace and directness. He set up Simeon Smith who hit a powerfull shot over the bar and then shot wide himself when well placed. Loz Shannon hit a sweet shot just wide in reply then James Dance stung the keepers hands and Micheal Campbell nearly capitilised on the parry but the keeper did well again to clear for a corner. With the half time whistle due Town keeper Craig Johnson made a great save from Simeon Smith and the same player had the ball in the net a minute later but the effort was ruled out for off side.

Coleshill were much improved in the second half as they took the game to Walsall. Their early dominace paid off when Matty Robinson was upended just inside the box on 52mins and captain Neil Kitching confidently stroked the ball home. Dance hit the side netting, Campbell had a header cleared off the line, Robinson headed over and Dance hit the post as Coleshill pinned Wood back in their own half but Simeon Smith was still a danger and Lee Hunt had to be sharp to clear from the striker for a corner. Johnson saved the resulting effort on the line. From another corner Coleshill rode their luck as Andy Sutherland cleared a Stuart McNaught header via the post. On 76 mins Coleshill got the second goal that gave them some breathing space. Lee Hunt cleared well to turn the Wood defence and Matty Robinson ran clear and lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper and into the net. Wood continued to look dangerous on the break and on 86 mins, after several blocked efforts, Anthony Juxon found time and space to side foot into the corner of the net. Game on. Dance hit a volley over the bar and Robinson saw the home keeper save his goalbound shot with his feet. Coleshill tried to play out the clock by keeping the ball in the corner but Robinson squirmed free and shot under the keeper and into the net from a very tight angle to secure the points.

New found confidence, a settled side and a bit of team spirit has took Coleshill to three straight wins, a great time to be putting a run together. March fixtures are going to be very tough but taking one game at a time, if Town are still in the hunt at the end of that month anything can happen!

Team:- Craig Johnson, Andy Sutherland, Neil Kitching, Richard Kavanaugh, Kristian Kelsall (Lee Hunt), James Dance, Simon Volante, Steve Smith, Michael Campbell (Ash Robinson), Matty Robinson, Loz Shannon (Lee James). Subs not used Danny Carter, Raddi Richards.

ANOTHER VIEW
Below is a report taken from Nuneaton Griff web site from MASE who I presume to be the old Bolehall manager Rob Masefield.
Walsall Wood 1 - 3 Coleshill Town

As a neutral I went to watch my mate Steve Smith return to the club he left only 2 weeks ago. Interesting to say the least

Thought Wood started the brighter of the two sides and in all honesty they looked like the side in the the top three. Hassled and worked hard to stop Coleshill from playing which meant Coleshill reverted to long balls into Campbell to hold up and link the play. However, it didnt pay off. No clear cut chances for either side really in the first 45 except right on half time when Simeon Smith beat a square back four and raced in on goal. As he tried to round the keeper the Town number 1 made a brave save at his feet to prevent the way side going in 1-0 down. On first 45 mins performance for me it looked like Wood were going to be worthy winners.

2nd half a different story, Carl must have said something to his lads as they started alot more brighter and were first to everything. Disappointingly Wood failed to rise to the challenge and it was no shock when Matty Robinson rolled his marker in the box on approx 60 mins and was duly tripped. The penalty was cooly finished by Kitching. With Wood failing to clear there lines and still under pressure Robinson got his frst of the day as he beat the offside trap and cooly lobbed the ball over the advancing Clarke.

Wood were thrown a lifeline when Juxon equalised failing some poor defending from a corner and 2 mins later could have equalised but spurned a good chance. Matty Robinson got his 2nd of the day as he slotted home with a powerful drive from a tight angle.

Overall, not a vintage game but to be fair to Coleshill they continued to battle and work hard for each other, however, expected more from a side who are challenging for the league. Also must have jinxed my mate Stevie as by his own admissions he didn't have the best of days!

Walsall Wood 1 Coleshill Town 3

Wood Started better and after only 6 minutes, Tangini Ngishidimbwa fed Jamel Fuller who won a right wing corner, keeper Johnson's poor punch falling luckily to his own player.
It took town 18 minutes to first threaten the Wood goal, Dance intercepted a ball in midfield and found Shannon who ran on and fired wide from 20 yards.
On 23 minutes Simeon Tulloch made an incisive right wing break, his ball inside found Simon Smith, he turned and fired over from 15 yards. 4 minutes later, the ball came to him from a right wing corner and his first time shot was too high. On 28 minutes Tulloch won the ball on the right, raced into the box and his cross shot rolled agonisingly wide of the far post.
From a left wing Town corner on 31 minutes, Kitching glanced a header well wide. 3 minutes later a move through the middle put Steve Smith in on goal, keeper Rob Clarke pushing his shot away. After 43 minutes, a left wing free kick found it's way to Robinson, Steve Moore in quickly to block his shot.
Wood ended the half on top, on 44 minutes Adam Whitehead cut in from the right before being stopped by Kitching and Johnson. On 45 minutes, whitehead turned provider playing Simeon Smith in on goal, Johnson saving bravely at his feet. Then in injury time Tulloch crossed from the right to Fuller to score at the far post. An offside flag against Smith ruling the effort out.
Town put Wd under pressure from the start of the second half and on 51 minutes Robinson was brought down on the edge of the box and up stepped Kitching to despatch the penalty. They should have gone 2 up on 60 minutes, Smith crossed from the left and unmarked at the far post Robinson put a header over. A minute later a defensive error let in Dance, Clarke making a great full length save. Dance was then on the end of a left wing move and shot into the side netting.
Wood's first chance came on 63 minutes, a Whitehead through ball found Smith in the clear but Hunt saved Town with a great tackle.
Back came Town and on 67 minutes Dance got away on the left, his ball inside was hit first time high and wide by Smith.
Wood kept going, looking for an equaliser, it nearly came on 72 minutes from a right wing corner Smith climbed highest and his goalbound effort was scrambled off the line by Sutherland.
The game was settled on 77 minutes, a ball over the top was collected by Robinson, he ran on and calmly lobbed the advancing Clarke.
Wood almost pulled one back on 86 minutes, a superb left to right crossfield ball by Anthony Juxon found Theo Lewars on the edge of the box, he took one touch and then fired wide. they halved the arrears on 88 minutes, Fuller cut in from the left and set up Smith, his shot was blocked but dropped to Juxon who fired home from close range.
On 90 minutes Robinson cut in from the left, Clarke saving at the near post with his feet. From the corner they played keep ball on the line until Robinson took out 3 defenders and scored with a vicious cross shot.
I don't know what the Coleshill manager said to his players at half time, but it worked.
Bill Shaw.
