Continental Star 1 v 4 Coleshill Town

Postby Alan Beckett » Mon Mar 10, 2008 8:10 pm

SATURDAY 8th MARCH 2008
MIDLAND COMBINATION PREMIER DIVISION
CONTINENTAL STAR 1 v 4 COLESHILL TOWN
Scorer: Neil Kitching 4.

Manager Carl Adams was away on a course so Assistant Manager John Scott took charge. Andy Sutherland was unavailable so a change was inevitable from the side that lost to leaders Highgate last week. Coleshill switched to a 3-5-2 formation with Lee Hunt and Kristian Kelsall coming in at the back, Neil Kitching was the preferred target man and Ryan Scott came in as the extra midfielder. Switching Kitch up front worked a treat as the captain claimed all four of Coleshill’s goals but the three at the back didn’t work so well and after going 1-0 down early on Town switched back to the more familiar 4-4-2.

The wind was again a factor but wasn’t as strong as last week. The three man defence was found wanting as early as the third minute as Kirt Maraugh got on the end of a long ball and quickly got his left foot shot away beating the dive of Craig Johnson to give Star the lead. Richard Kavanaugh had all the time in the world but his back pass was anticipated by Maraugh and Johnson had to pick the ball up giving away a free kick. Coleshill forced a corner and a great delivery by Lee Millard was only just cleared but it was Star who had the next best chance as Andre Robinson had his effort saved by Johnson when clean through and Maraugh had an effort tipped over the bar by the Town keeper. From a throw in deep in the opposition half, Kristain Kelsall and Steve Smith combined for the later to send over a perfect cross which Neil Kitching got to and planted a firm header past the home keeper. 18 mins 1-1. Continental full back Wesley Grey sent in across that only just eluded Robinson but Coleshill were starting to get on top although they took the lead in fortunate circumstances. Steve Smith blocked a clearance and the ball spun back into the Star box and into the feet of Kitching who was upended by Victor O’Haji who got booked for his tackle. Kitching confidently finished from the spot on 27 mins. A deep James Dance free kick was lifted back into the box by Smith and Simon Volante hit the outside of the post with a curling shot. The pace of Robinson and Maraugh was still causing problems and the latter shot just over after a good run. On 39 mins Coleshill attacked swiftly from their own box. Dance took the ball on passed several players and slotted the ball through for the onrushing Matty Robinson. Again he was hauled to the ground, and again it was O’Haji and again he received a yellow card quickly followed by a red. Kitching stepped up to score his hat trick and Coleshill’s 100th goal of the season in all competitions. Maraugh and Robinson combined and the latter’s shot was palmed away for a corner and from the resulting kick Maraugh headed back to Robinson who had a shot blocked on the line.

Coleshill seemed to sit back in the second half and even with a man short it was Star who made all the running and had the better chances. Dance did well to block a Tony Green shot, Johnson showed good hands to collect a high cross, Lee Hunt stretched to reach a through ball that would have put Robinson clear and Johnson made a great save to deny Maraugh, but it was Coleshill who scored next in their only meaningful attack of the half. Stuart Adamson crossed to the near post and Kitching’s head did the rest for No4 on 79 mins. Star hit the post direct from a corner and Hunt cleared a Maraugh shot off the line before the home keeper made a good save from a Matty Robinson effort that the striker would have expected to put away.

Not a vintage performance but an important win after the disappointment of the last two weeks. Good news was that Southam lost again and they are due at Pack Meadow in two weeks time, so second place is still very much in our own hands but 1st seems a miracle away.

Team;- Craig Johnson, Kristian Kelsall (Stuart Adamson), Lee Millard, Lee Hunt, Richard Kavanaugh, James Dance, Ryan Scott, Steve Smith (Ashley Robinson), Simon Volante, Neil Kitching (Michael Campbell), Matty Robinson. Sub not used Nick Usher.
