Saturday 12th April 2008
Midland Combination Premier Division
Coventry Copsewood 2 v 5 Coleshill Town
Scorers: Matty Robinson 3, Danny Carter 2.

Coleshill certainly like to do it the hard way. Who's idea was it to give Copsewood a two goal start before we started to play! The home team were good value for that lead as Coleshill defended poorly but in the formation manager Carl Adams prefers, there is always goals, and once Matty Robinson got the first the confidence returned and the win was finally ground out.

Adams decided to keep faith with the team that did so well at Southam on Tuesday but a change had to happen and when Dave Davies came on for the second half the defence looked much more solid. Lee Millard and Stuart Adamson were still missing due to injury but Neil Kitching, despite a broken toe, made it onto the bench.

Coleshill started surprisingly poorly, not expected from a team with six straight wins under their belt. The home team had a shout for a penalty, Chris Ward blasted over from right in front of goal and Paul Green's run and cross was headed clear by Richard Kavanaugh before Copsewood took the lead on 9mins. Tom Muldoon's cross from deep on the right evaded the despairing dive of Craig Johnson in the Coleshill goal and landed into the far corner of the net. Lee Hunt had a volley cleared off the line when set up by Matty Robinson and Danny Carter had a shot blocked before Copsewood increased their lead on 17mins. A free kick was floated to the far post and headed back into the danger area and Chris Partridge was on hand to force the ball home. There is no doubt that Coleshill are much better going forward than defending and it was a sweeping move from defence that got them back into the game. James Dance ran from deep passed to Danny Carter who returned the complement to Dance now in the box. He cleverly laid the ball off to Matty Robinson who finished with confidence for his 27th of the season. Only three minutes later and Coleshill were level. Michael Campbell held the ball up well and fed Simon Volante who worked the ball to the bye line and crossed for Danny Carter to volley home from on the goal line. Craig Johnson made two great saves from a corner and then Muldoon almost repeated his goal but saw his cross hit the bar before going over.

Coleshill shuffled the defence and looked more comfortable with the experienced Dave Davies taking a central role. On 50 mins the game turned in Coleshill's favour. Matty Robinson got on the end of a Volante through ball and attempted to lob the home keeper. Unfortunatley Scott Furlong had come out of his box and as he handled the ball the referee had little option but to send the stopper off, with a little assistance from his linesman. The home team never gave up and were the closest to scoring next. Sean McCallum had a good run down the right and his cross was headed goalward by Chris Ward but Johnson made another good save. Copsewood had the ball in the net from a corner but Johnson was adjudged to be pushed in attempting to catch. Richard Kavanaugh plowed forward into the box and his cross found Campbell directly in front of goal but the striker hit an air shot much to his embarrasment. On 61 mins Coleshill edged in front with a sweeping move. Dance again ran at the defence and laid of to Carter who hit a hard and low cross for Robinson to volley home at the far post. Robinson then hit the post after a turn and shot before Partridge ran well into the box only to see the ball run away at the last moment, and Muldoon forced a corner after another good run. On 73 mins Ryan Scott fed Carter in the box but on the bye line. The striker tried to cross with a cheeky scissor flick but the ball hit a hand and the referee awarded a penalty. Up stepped Robinson to complete his hat trick. Campbell rolled his man and powerfully shot wide before Kavanaugh made a great tackle on Partridge who had been fed by Muldoon who was easily Copsewood's best player. Neil Kitching came on and nearly scored but his placed shot went just wide but his persistance forced a mistake on 87mins and Carter pounced on a back pass and stroked the ball home for No5.

Seven straight wins has put the pressure on Highgate with only five points now seperating the teams. With games running out it's probably a step too far but second place is now secured and only time will tell if it's enough for promotion.

Team Craig Johnson, Andy Sutherland (Ryan Scott), Kristian Kelsall (Dave Davies), Lee Hunt, Richard Kavanaugh, James Dance, Steve Smith, Simon Volante, Matty Robinson, Michael Campbell (Neil Kitching), Danny Carter. Sub not used Carl Adams.
