Midland Combination Premier Division
Coleshill Town 2 v 1 Pershore Town
Scorers: Danny Carter, Neil Kitching.
Captain Neil Kitching returned to the starting line up, with his broken toe, for Coleshill's last home game of their record breaking season. Lee Millard had recovered enough from his injury to make the bench but Stuart Adamson is still a couple of weeks away. Pershore are a much changed team from the beginning of the season. When Coleshill went to King George Playing field on 29th September, Pershore were unbeaten and top of the league but Town put in one of their best performanaces and came away with a 3-0 win. Since then Pershore's manager left and took most of the squad with him and their recent form has been poor, one win in six, but they will have a say in the championship as Highgate visit them on the last day of the season. Obviously Coleshill will be hoping for a Pershore victory but although they worked really hard in this game they lacked quality and would need to be better to deny the Gate the title.
Coleshill should have had the game rapped up in the first twenty minutes but unusually the strikers had an off day with Matty Robinson the main offender. Danny Carter and Robinson had early efforts that were easy saves for the visitors keeper from good positions. Michael Campbell and Robinson combined to set Carter clear but the striker saw the keeper tip his shot over the bar. Neil Kitching headed clear from just within his own half and suddenly Carter and Robinson were free on goal. Robinson took charge but sent his shot wide. Carter jinked his way to some space in the box and his left foot shot come cross went just passed the far post. Lee Hunt punted forward and a clever flick from Carter left Robinson with sight of goal but again his effort went wide. Little had been seen of Pershore as an attacking force but Tom Coley sent a powerfull shot well over the bar. Carter shot across goal and Campbell was only just short of tapping in at the far post. James Dance ran at the defence and 1-2'd with Campbell but toe poked over on the stretch. Simon Volante sent Robinson clear but Pershore captain Gavin Knight made a great tackle right infront of goal to send the ball out for a corner. Richard Kavanaugh swung in the ball with only seconds left of the half. The ball evaded everybody and Robinson and Carter were at the far post to force the ball home, Carter claiming the goal.
Pershore started the second half the brighter of the two sides. Will Pedley crossed and Mark Atkinson was only just shot of getting a vital touch, easily Pershore's best chance. Atkinson, who as a lone striker worked tirelessly, and nearly got his reward but Kitching got in a goal saving tackle. Coleshill increased their lead on 59 minutes with a fortunate goal. James Dance floated in a free kick intended for Kitching's head but Knight got there first, his header going between the keepers legs and appeared to cross the line but Kitching claimed the final touch. Robinson finally found his shooting boots finishing well but the effort was disallowed for a push earlier in the move. Atkinson sent a diving header from a free kick just past the post. Dance's cross cum shot was flapped away for a corner and Robinson sent a volley just wide from the kick. On 85 minutes Pershore and Atkinson got some reward for their hard days work. Coleshill had several chances to clear a bouncing ball in the box but Atkinson reacted the quickest to lob the ball over Johnson and although Sutherland tried desperatley to clear off the line the ball hit the top of the net. Carter hit the post in the final minutes but Pershore so nearly snatched an equaliser as Ashley Mitchell's back header went just passed the post.
Eight wins in a row, two games to go and Coleshill haven't given up on the title. Highgate go to Pershore next week in their final game hoping to rap up the championship but should they slip up Town's final game at Cadbury on 3rd May will be massive.
Team: Craig Johnson, Andy Sutherland, Richard Kavanaugh, Neil Kitching (Dave Davies), Lee Hunt, James Dance (Kristain Kelsall), Simon Volante, Steve Smith, Danny Carter, Michael Campbell (Lee Millard), Matty Robinson. Subs not used Ryan Scott, Carl Adams.
