Midland Combination Premier Division
Brereton Social 1 v 7 Coleshill Town
Scorers: James Dance 4, Neil Kitching, Danny Carter, Matty Robinson.
24 Years ago Coleshill headed the table going into the final game of the season. All they had to do was draw at Hurley Daw Mill and the title was theirs but a Mill goal five minutes from time sunk the Town and Studley Sporting took the championship. It's took a long time but next saturday Coleshill have a chance to reverse that last day drama and nick the Mid Com Premier title from long time leaders Highgate.
To get to this position Coleshill had to go on a tremendous run to haul back Highgate who had one hand on the trophy. Nine straight wins, undefeated in eleven, 41 goals for and 11 against is the current form and one more win will give Coleshill the prize on goal difference. Coleshill have done all they could but they still needed Highgate to slip up and as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Pershore, Town scored five second half goals to see off a hard working Brereton who never gave up.
Manager Carl Adams has found it easy to pick the side in recent weeks and again the starting eleven was unchanged. A huge bonus was to see Josh McPherson back involved after a long absence and although he made the bench, his target is to be fit for the start of next season.
Funny as it may sound when you have just scored seven goals but for the second week running, Coleshill's prolific forward line struggled to find the net and it was left to James Dance to show them how to do it with a four goal haul. Michael Campbell overrun the ball when free on goal, Matty Robinson hit the bar with a header before Coleshill took the lead on 14 mins with Danny Carter reaching the bye line before crossing for Neil Kitching to tap in from a yard out. Brereton worked hard but rarely troubled Craig Johnson in the Town goal. Richard (Strach) Kavanaugh headed over from a corner and Carter shot weakly from a good position before Coleshill increased the lead on 28 mins. Dance and Campbell combined for the later to cross into the path of Carter for another tap in. Robinson and Carter then had one on one's before Brereton hit back with possibly the best goal of the game. There appeared to be no danger from a long ball but Paul Lezniav hit the ball on the volley from distance and the effort looped over Johnson and into the net. Carter hit the side netting, Kitching hit the post and Carter was denied another one on one with a great tackle.
With the slope to their advantage Coleshill dominated the second half. Campbell went free but Peter Hitchman got back well to clear for a corner, Carter had a volley cleared off the line and Robinson had a header deflected for yet another corner, but Coleshill made the game safe on 57 minutes when a quick throw in to Carter was fed into Dance who finished with confidence for a 3-1 lead. Carter forced the keeper to punch and Robinson headed for an open goal but Hitchman got back and headed clear from under the bar. Dance got his second on 67 mins with a bit of fortune. His high lob bounced over the home keeper and into the net. It wasn't Robinson's day and he shot wide again when a Steve Smith header sent him clear, then headed wide from a yard out from a Kavanaugh run and cross. Robinson did eventually get his customery goal as on 78 mins he found the net with an overhead kick. It was left to Dance to round off a fine individual performance with the last two goals, a turn and shot on 88 mins and just to show the forwards how to do it a one on one in the last minute that was finished with style and confidence.
Whatever happens next week, the Mid Com is likely to lose two of it's longest serving teams in Highgate and Coleshill, with over 75 years and 2500 games between them, but having been in this league for so many years it would be disappointing to move on having never won the title.
One game and one big day to put it all right!
Team:- Craig Johnson, Andy Sutherland, Richard Kavanaugh, Lee Hunt, Neil Kitching, James Dance, Steve Smith, Simon Volante, Danny Carter (Ryan Scott), Michael Campbell (dave Davies), Matty Robinson (Kristain Kelsall). Subs not used Josh McPherson, Lee Millard.
