LAST DAY OF THE SEASON - WILL HIGHGATE GO DOWN

LAST DAY OF THE SEASON - WILL HIGHGATE GO DOWN

Saturday 28th April Home to Highgate United.

What a game to end the season on, against the old enemy Highgate. Given our miserable record against them, it's a good job we don't need the points to stop up BUT, they do!

Nothing but a win will do for Highgate and even then they will be relying on Heather losing at home to Bridgenorth!

I can't see Highgate getting out of the bottom three and then it's down to IF all three clubs are relegated! This league is renowned for delaying decisions on who and how many teams go up or down, Coleshill and Highgate as an example back in 2008/09 when Town won the Mid Com but Gate were promoted and Coleshill had to fight to join them! With that in mind I think it would be ironic if Highgate go down this season but to be honest I don't really care either way!

However, here is my history of matches against Highgate, not complete as many results are missing, but we have been playing them for many, many years and they definately have the upper hand!

WE MEET AGAIN - Highgate United

Highgate were formed in 1948, ironically by a group of orphans from Father Hudson's Homes in Coleshill. They played in the South Birmingham League but in 1964 they joined the then Worcestershire Combination, later to become the Midland Combination, after moving to Tythebarn Lane.

Coleshill Town joined them in the Mid Com's top flight in 1975 and from then the two teams have met every year, apart from 2000/01 when Coleshill dropped into Div 1 for a season, and after all those years of trying, they even made the step up to the Alliance together.

In all Highgate spent 43 seasons in the Mid Com, winning the title 3 times, and playing more than 1600 games, outstripping Coleshill's 32 seasons and nearly 1200 games. Only Walsall Wood, Northfield, West Midlands Police and Knowle, who are all still playing in the Com, could compete with those figures.

In total the two teams have met 100 times but unfortunately I only have details of 75 games, 71 league and four cup matches, with Highgate coming out on top. Indeed, records would suggest Highgate are a bit of a bogey side to Coleshill. In the last 20 meetings Town have only won four times, losing eleven, and in a struggling season they have already beaten us at their place earlier this year. Even the year Coleshill finally lifted the Mid Com Title they lost to the Gate three times (once in the Challenge Cup). On the bright side, that year, after losing to the Gate at Pack Meadow, the Colemen then went on a 12 game unbeaten run to pip Highgate to the championship on the last day of the season.

As we stand this season Coleshill are 5 places and 6 points above Highgate. So, a definite three points in the bag! Don't bet on it!
