WE MEET AGAIN 2012/13 – AFC Wulfrunians
During a season you may, on the odd occasion, come up against a team you have never met before, either in a cup competition or a new team in the league. But this season it is going to happen a few times. In the league we will play against Stourport Swifts who we have never met before and we will also play Gornal Athletic and we have only ever played them once before, in the FA Vase, and then in this years FA Vase we will meet Stafford Town for the first time and this afternoon we entertain AFC Wulfrunians, the first ever meeting between the two sides (as far as I know!).
AFC Wulfrunians were established in 2005, although it is an offshoot of the Old Wulfrunians club, which has existed since 1922. Teams from the club still compete in the Birmingham Amateur Football Association under the Old Wulfrunians name. AFC Wulfrunians joined the West Midlands (Regional) League in 2005. In their first season, they won the Division Two Championship, and in their second they finished as runners-up in Division One, earning promotion for the 2007–08 season to the West Midlands Regional League Premier Division. In the 2008–09 season the club won the championship of this league. The previous two seasons – 2009–10 and 2010–11 have both resulted in third place finishes. After ending as runners up in 2007–08 and 2008–09, AFC Wulfrunians won the JW Hunt Cup in 2010–11 with a 3–0 win against Gornal Athletic.
Seeing as we have nothing to report as far as these two sides are concerned I thought I’d have a look at Coleshill’s involvement in the FA Cup over the years. CTFC were first eligible to compete in 1983 but after only two seasons the rules changed and for 22 years they were unable to enter. Another re-defining of the rules meant Town re-entered the FA Cup in 2007 and have competed in the cup ever since. But it wasn’t until 2008 that Coleshill won their first game in the competition, an away win at Tividale, up until then the only time the sides had ever met but of course the two are in the same league now. The furthest Coleshill have got in the competition was in 2010 when they got to the dizzy heights of the 3rd Qualifying Round. Unfortunately it then came to an abrupt end at Nuneaton Town, a 6-0 thrashing in front of a 900 strong crowd. You may also notice how Danny Carter loves this Cup. He has, so far, scored 15 goals, here’s hoping the little maestro continues that rich vein of form this afternoon.
