Highgate United made their best yet start to a season by opening the scoring after only 30 seconds. Morby made ground on the left wing and centred for Denton Martin to hammer the ball into the net from 8 yards. Further pressure saw Highgate increase their lead after 24 mins when Denton Martin tapped the ball in. Poor organisation in the home defence allowed the unmarked McNaught to pull one back with a header in first half injury time. Man Of The Match Morby found Jerome Edwards with a flick after 54 mins and the striker rounded Lawrence before shooting into an empty net.
Team: Lawrence, Curly, Cooke, Hurst, Edmonds, Russell, Whipps, Link, McNaught, Christopher, Williams. Subs Malley, Harris.

NB The Morby mentioned above I believe to be Dave Morby who was later to become joint manager at Coleshill with Tony Gormley.

Gate Off To Best Start
Highgate United got off to their best ever start to a season by opening the scoring after only 30 seconds. But Manager Les Dolphin still has a long way to go in his rebuiding of a Highgate side after two seasons in the doldrums. Although Highgate won by two clear goals the margin against an unimpressive Coleshill side should have been five or six at least. Highgate could easily have won more convincingly but for lack of rhythm and method which spoiled their enthusiasm for long periods. The opening goal came when winger Dave Morby made ground on the left flank and centred for Denton Martin to power in and hammer the ball in from 8 yards. Highgate deservedly went further ahead after 24 minutes when a long centre from Morby squeezed under the diving Lawrence and Denton Martin was left to tap the ball over the line from close range. Coleshill pulled one back in first half injury time when poor marking allowed McNaught to head home from a Christopher corner after a period of sustained pressure. The visitors dominated the opening stages of the second half and pegged Highgate back for the first few minutes, but a swift break saw a Morby flick slice through the often non-existent Coleshill defence and find Jerome Edwards who rounded Lawrence to shoot into an empty net. Morby and Edwards both went close to increasing the lead while at the other end Nadeem Butt was in fine form to pull off excellent saves from Edmunds and McNaught.
N.B. An in depth report from Solihull News. Strange that when a Solihull team won the report was very good but when Coleshill drew with Highgate later in the season, no report and when Coleshill beat Solihull Borough 5-2 on Easter Monday the game wasn't even mentioned.
50 Years Ago 1962/63
The season didn’t start this early. Coleshill’s first game this season was on the 18th August at home to Sherwood Rangers, so we will take a look at that next week. Coleshill were in the Birmingham Youth & Old Boys League Mercian Division and had been for the previous seven years. They were on the back of a very successful season when in 1961/62 they won the Aston Villa Shield and were beaten finalists in the league Senior Cup, although they only finished 6th in the league. Their greatest rivals in those days were Coleshill Hall Hospital who were league champions the previous year. The two clubs had some epic battles no more so than in the Coleshill Charity Cup. The two clubs finally merged in 1966 which eventually led to Coleshill Town joining the Worcestershire Combination, now Midland Combination.
100 Years Ago 1912/13
Coleshill didn’t start their season until 7th September, away to Atherstone, so it will be a few weeks before we go into detail with results. Town were in the Trent Valley League for this one season. They had been in the Birmingham Youth & Old Boys League for six seasons but decided to give the Tamworth based league a try. War broke out in 1914 and when football re-started for the 1919/20 season Coleshill joined the Sutton & District League.
Depending on the year, it is sometimes very difficult to pick up good information! If you are able to help with facts and figures or even photographs please contact the web site. Many Thanks.
