Coleshill Town stretched their unbeaten run to 6 games as a result of a hard earned draw at highly rated Ashtree Highfield. Coleshill took the lead after 12minutes when a free kick from 20yards by Williams took a deflection on its way into the net. Ashtree then dominated until the break and Chapman in the Coleshill goal excelled himself with a fine display to keep the home side from drawing level. The second half was evenly fought but in the 87th minute Ashtree scored a deserved goal when Borrows took advantage of a defensive mix-up to net the equaliser.

After Radburn had put Town into an early lead Walmley surprised with two in reply from Taylor and Perry. It did not take the home team long to wipe Walmley’s margin off with the aid of Radburn who fired in two goals to complete his hat-trick. Reynolds and Statham put the issue beyond doubt before Walmley scored their final goal.

These teams met on Saturday last on the Parkfield Road Ground before a good gate. The homesters played down hill in the first half and started the game in promising style. Hardidge and Nichols were very prominent and made several attacks on the visitors goal. Both teams put plenty of energy into their play. Sutton forwards were very quick on the ball and gave the Coleshill half backs plenty of work to do, the left wing in particular was very smart and Freeman assisted by Clare did much useful work in spoiling their attacks. Coleshill were the first to score and the point was well deserved. After a smart passing movement between the inside forwards, Nichols secured the ball and after getting the better of the left back, sent the ball with excellent judgement to Harbidge who was well placed and he scored with a beautiful shot which gave the visitors goalkeeper no chance. The visitors played with increased energy after this and Shinton in the goal distinguished himself on several occasions. Once he kicked the ball clear with an opposing forward only about a yard away and on another occasion he fell with the ball under him about a foot from the goal line and although the Sutton forwards tried hard to get the ball into the net, Shinton managed to keep possession until the referee’s whistle blew and a free kick relieved the danger. Clive and Grout played splendidly at this period and it was principally owing to their sterling work that the visitors did not score. Just before half time play slowed down considerably. The homesters had two splendid chances of scoring. Neville, who was well placed a few yards from goal, shooting against the side of the net with great force. Harbidge too got through the defence in nice style but his final shot was too high and went over the crossbar. Half Time came with the score 1-0 in favour of Coleshill.
On resuming Sutton soon gave evidence that they meant business. Straight from the kick off the visitors secured possession and before the spectators had hardly realised that play had commenced the scores were level. After that Coleshill played as a beaten team and Shinton in goal had a warm time. He saved many excellent shots and but for his fine display the score would have been considerably increased. The Coleshill players tired perceptibly before the finish and the defence had a difficult task. When the whistle blew the visitors had gained an easy victory by 5 goals to 1.
The Coleshill committee have no reason to take this defeat too seriously. They were drawn against strong opponents, a team which regularly plays in good company in the Suburban Laegue. Coleshill started strongly but before half time they had shot their bolt. This is practically the first match the players have played this season and to play a cup-tie calling for their best efforts was too much against such opponents. There are one or two places in the team that want strengthening and these will no doubt be noticed by the committee. When the team have settled down there is no doubt they will give a good account of themselves in the Trent Valley League and the other cup-ties. A League match should have been played on Saturday but owing to the number of cup-ties to be played in the Tamworth district it was impossible to fix a match. The Committee have therefore arranged a match with McCullum’s XI, a smart young team from Birmingham and this game will provide an excellent opportunity to make alterations in the team, with the object of getting the best players possible for each position.

NB. The Fazeley Charity Cup was a very prodigious event in those days with many local teams entering the competition. It was first played in 1896 and is still competed for to this day.
