THIS WEEK 2012/13 No12

25 Years ago, 1987/88

Saturday 17th October 1987
Midland Combination
Kings Heath 3 v 1 Coleshill Town
Scorer: Hughes.
Sunday Mercury Wrote
Kings Heath put the visitors under a lot of early pressure without creating any goalscoring chances. The first real chance fell to the home side after 15mins when Roberts cut inside the Coleshill defence and squared the ball across the face of the goal but Welsh failed to make contact and the chance was wasted. The game progressed into a mid-field battle with neither side gaining an advantage. After 30mind Roberts again outpaced the visitors defence only for his cross to be knocked out for a corner. But from the flag kick Busst gave Kings Heath the lead when he fired home from 18 yards. This goal inspired Coleshill who produced their best spell and put the home defence under pressure without making any real impression. Just before the interval Williams had a good chance for the visitors but shot tamely at Bly in the home goal. Five minutes into the second period the home side increased their lead after sound work by Carroll in midfield. His pass found McGann out on the left and he in turn crossed the ball to the far post where Roberts slotted it home. After 65mins Coleshill pulled a goal back when Neil Hughes’s shot took a deflection off Busst. Two minutes later the home side regained their two goal advantage. Welsh centred from the right and Roberts netted with a brilliant diving header. Five minutes later Roberts should have got his hat-trick when a mistake by Hurst in the visitors defence left him clear but his shot went wide.

Saturday 19th October 1912
Friendly Match Arranged
Coleshill Town 21 -0 McCullum’s XI
Coleshill Chronicle Wrote:-
Coleshill were unable to arrange a League game on Saturday last and a friendly game was played with McCullum’s XI. Coleshill had only one alteration in the team which lost to Sutton Town the previous week. The visitors were not fully represented and were no match in any department for the home team. McCullum’s won the toss and decided to kick up hill with the advantage of the sun and wind behind them. From the opening exchanges it appeared as if the match would be evenly contested but Coleshill soon proved their superiority. One of the visitors defenders was penalised about 30 yards from goal. Freeman took the kick splendidly and scored a fine goal. A few minutes after Harbidge got possession of the ball and scored with a magnificent shot which gave the goalkeeper no chance. Nichols scored the next goal. A fine effort left him with the ball about 10 yards from the sticks and only the keeper to beat. Few goalkeepers would have stopped that goal being scored. Coleshill had now got the measure of their opponents and goals came frequently. The game was far too one sided to be of much interest and the final score of 21 goals to nil about represents the home team’s superiority over their opponents. Comments on the match are not necessary.
Team: Goal T. Shinton, backs P.Neville, and E. Grout, half backs B. Freeman, J. Clare and E. Clive, forwards N. Neville, J. Nichols, B. Hardidge, F. Brooks and H. Williams.
For Saturday a match has been arranged with Normanfells – a team from Birmingham – and it is expected that the visitors will provide a good game. The match will commence at 3 o’clock
