WE MEET AGAIN – GORNAL ATHLETIC

“The Colemen” and “The Peacocks” have never met in a league game before. Gornal were in the Midland Combination for 12 seasons but this was prior to Coleshill joining the Mid Com in 1975 so the two teams have managed to avoid each other in league competition. They have, however met once before in the FA Vase, or should I say twice, as it took a replay to separate the sides.
NB. This is according to my data but of course if you know different please let me know!

1977/78
Both sides were struggling in their respective leagues, Gornal in the West Midlands Premier had just one point from their opening four games and Coleshill in the Midland Combination Division 1 also had only one point from four games but had been knocked out of the Challenge Cup at the first stage.

Saturday 24th September 1977
FA Vase Preliminary Round
Coleshill Town 1-1 Gornal Athletic
No other details appeared in the Sunday Mercury.

Saturday 1st October 1977. It was played on a Saturday as neither side had floodlights in those days.
FA Vase Preliminary Round Replay
Gornal Athletic 1-4 Coleshill Town

Coleshill Fired By Rossiter
Despite the incentive of a sixth minute lead – scored in fine style by their best forward Dave Shaw – complacent Gornal were humiliated in this FA Vase 1st Round Replay. Casual play allowed Coleshill to net a 12th minute equaliser through Steve Jones. John Rossiter then put them into the lead in the 18th minute. Bad marking by the home defence led to Coleshill’s third goal before the break, Gary Mottram lifted a free kick over a wall and defender Steve Taylor handled. Colin Holder made no mistake from the spot. Otherwise reliable keeper Peter Leeson was himself guilty of complacency in the 81st minute when he allowed a shot from Rossiter to slip from his grasp for Coleshill’s fourth.

NB. Colin Holder was later to become Coleshill’s manager when they lifted the Walsall Senior Cup in 1983.

Town went on to play Bridgnorth Town in the 1st Round but lost at home 2-1, Rossiter again the scorer.

The two sides have met a few times at Youth team level and just last month Coleshill Youths beat Athletic Youths in the FA Cup by 9 goals to nil.
