THIS WEEK 2012/13 No36

25 Years ago, 1987/88

Saturday 2nd April 1988
Midland Combination
Northfield Town 3 v 2 Coleshill Town
Scorers: Hall, Christopher pen.
Sunday Mercury Wrote:
A game of contrasting halves saw Northfield Town finally emerge as comfortable winners. Coleshill’s lively attack gave the Northfield defence a torrid time for the first 25 minutes with Sandiford and Christopher particularly dangerous but the home defence stood firm. Walker was not unduly troubled until the 21st minute when Sandiford beat two men before finding Hall who had the simplest of tasks to slot the ball home. This signalled a resurgence for Northfield and it was suddenly Coleshill’s turn to be put on the defensive. The home side equalised on 41 minutes when Young pounced on Pedley’s pass to score. Northfield dictated play in the second half but could not score until Sandiford was sent off for an alleged comment to the linesman in the 74th minute. Gasper gave Northfield the lead in the 81st minute and Young increased it two minutes later. Coleshill pulled one back through a Christopher penalty.

No details of a game for Coleshill this week-end.
Coleshill Chronicle wrote: Coleshill Charity Cup Semi Final sees holders Tamworth WMC take on Stockingford Allotments Society. The Final is traditionally played on Easter Monday but due to the bad weather the competition is only at the Semi-Final stage. The other semi is between North Warwickshire Colliery and Sutton Town.
Coleshill have a league game against Bromsgrove on Saturday and then travel to Hill Rovers on Easter Tuesday.

100 Years Ago 1912/13

Saturday 5th April 1913
Coleshill Town 3 v 2 Wilnecote Trinity
Scorers: Not known.
Coleshill Chronicle Wrote:
Wilnecote Trinity visited Coleshill to play the postponed league match. Coleshill had a strong side out, but several players were placed in fresh positions and the team lined up as follows: Hinton goal, P.Neville and J. Nichols backs, Freeman, Grout, and Clive half backs, Clare, Wright, Thorneycroft, Finlan, and Williams forwards.
From the start it was evident that Coleshill were not in a serious mood and the football was not very interesting from a spectator’s point of view. Kicking uphill in the first half, Coleshill had the better of the play but Wilnecote were the first to score and maintained the lead until just before the whistle blew for half-time, when the equalising goal was scored.
The second half was a repetition of the first 45 minutes, play being of a poor description and Coleshill eventually ran out winners by 3 goals to 2.
Coleshill should have played Earl Shilton Vics in the Final of the Chapel End Cup on Saturday 12th April but the match has been postponed until the 19th April. Coleshill will therefore play the return league match with Kettlebrook Oakfield at Kettlebrook.
